Use the other one as a daily, if you can live with the rust for 18 months or so, then turn the black one into the project. Could always transfer the nice bits over to the black one?

It sounds like the consensus is that the best idea is to leave it and just spend the cash on the black one.
Shame, as I quite fancied aircon :(

Just that I dont have it on the cupra, and that if I'm spending a few grand on a car it would be a nice added extra to have for those odd hot journeys when I would turn it on rather than when I sweat my ass off in the Cupra!

Its not the end of the world, just thought that it could end up being a cheap way of getting a project car, but the rust worms might have set in just too much - flapper has worried me, and i've seen it happen before on cars that look fine on the outside, let alone ones which are already showing signs.

Ol, tbh, I have aircon in the '4' and had it in the last one.. it never gets used (much like the cruise-control).. I hear what your saying about the rust tohugh bloke, im fairly lucky that tin-worm hasnt bitten my car yet, so that would be one problem I would be looking at cost-wise.. if it was cheap enough, id poss go for it, but as you say , if its going to cost a lot to have it put right..

i could show you some horror pics of places to check if you want em, i didn't just grind it clean - cut it's throat out as i didn't fancy doinf it again in 4 years

actual arches/lips absolutely clean on mine but as an ex seaside motor it got in underneath the rear of the sills and under the sealer inside the arches and just went from there

the problem is that mk2's are getting on for 10 yrs + now, most of them will have rust & in similar places.
ok i've not really looked after mine too well, but it's only got 56k on it but the body is a mess, i'd rather have used it more, put more miles on & be in the condition it is now

I was thinking exactly the same thing tbh. Because Im guessing the black one has less miles than the one you looked at.

My arches havent started rusting yet and its coming up for 11. Theres alittle on the very lip of the arches but none under the arch liners. The stuff on the arch lips will be fixed in the summer along with a few other little bits on the car.
