Al at Autotechniks says that he is confident that he could fit the Quaife gear kit and still retain a much nicer feel than you had on the Golf, but even if this is true it doesn't solve the high speed synchro problem.
Ben

My Golf had a horrible vague change yes.. and the synchros did'nt like rev's >6K (not much good when you can go to 8K) - Had a long conversation with Al before plumping for dog box Nov last year. Combination of high revs and high power made the only decision for me... Reality however is something else!

Yea I'm sure it could have been a better box than I had on actual gear change, but doubt whether synchro's could be made to reliably work @ the higher rpms no matter what. Lapping in only lasts a short while.

Running my dog box built now and its turned into a 4spd sequential... Go figure. Had 5th gear selection problem since day #1, and repeated oil leak all reported as they occured (re-occured).  :hide:
Now have a 4spd sequential g'box :censored: :thumbd:

Yep! Very impressed. NOT!

Actual use on track has been very minimal due to other problems.
Did Scotland Kames sprint, Curborough sprint, Donington, Castle Combe (2 sessions & retired with sick motor), & Castle Combe on Friday... *5th gear selection problem since Donington. not exactly long lived Motorsport spec box is it???? 02J with a diff worked much longer without problem.

Bill, do you have the quaife bits in the original VW casing, or the Quaife 6 speeder box with their casing?

290-300whp should be possible with the right setup. I dont know how well the cars were ran @ powerstation. But the scooby boys normally see 320bhp there, and 340bhp @ Power Engineering. So looking at it maybe jabba aint far off the mark claiming 330bhp-350bhp on there rollers. In Bills case 286bhp would show 315-330bhp @ the crank at powerstation. And anywhere from 335-355 @ power engineering. I spoke to Custardcupra today and we both said the same thing @ present on Jabba's rollers were seeing 210bhp @ the wheels with IHI we will more than likely see 300-310 @ the wheels on the same rollers with more torque and bhp futher towards a 7500rpm redline. So its still 90-100bhp @ the wheels more than what we have now. I think the majority of cars (ibiza's) with the stage3 kit mapped by jabba on there rollers will see 335-340bhp @ the crank max. I dont think 350bhp is there for the majority of us. But i am sure it will still be a handfull and more than enough for road use. When mine's done i am gonna see if i can get an Atw power run at G-Force. And one @ Well Lane just for comparrisons sake.

From what I have seen at well lane, I wouldn't put a car on their rollers-unless they upped their standards in the last couple of years?

02J case with Quaife end case for 6spd bits. Did'nt think/know Quaife did a case other than the end part.

It was a few years back there was a mk3 golf 16v that had a 'full' quaife sequential gearbox inc diff etc for about 6k+vat that they used as a demo car up a hill climb in CCC

I can't remember a lot about the article now, but it just stuck in my head

I figured that it wasn't viable for you as you already owned the diff - I may be mistaken, they may not have made it in production qty's even.

Off topic a little but does anyone know where i can get a Peloquin Lsd from. Or any info regarding this product. And what clutch's are the best in releation to High power ie IHI.

What gearbox was it in the Golf?

I originally thought that the Golf 1.8Ts all had the 02M gearbox, which I thought didn't have the high speed synchro problem. But then I seem to remember you changing the box to an 02M, which naturally implies that thats not what was already in there. Did it have an 02J or 02A before, or something else?

Do you know whats caused the problems with your new box (ie. loosing 5th and 6th)? Are they stripped or just a selection problem? I guess they are not stripped as the lower gears would go first wouldn't they?

Any idea how to fix it so that it doesn't happen again?

Good luck

Ben

Any news Ben?.

Yes, I phoned Jabbasport today and spoke to Elton.

Its now booked in for 27th September, but the date could slip a couple of days because the car in before me is the first mk4 Ibiza they've done and so there could be delays.

So, hopefully things will actually happen!

We've even discussed the next step after the stage 3 too. I'm gonna go for the large port head, engined bored to 1.9 with uprated rods and pistons.... IF a gearbox solution can be found that is!

Cheers
Ben

Cheers. There good prices. I aint in no real hurry. I have my current clutch in place 38k and it seems okay. I also have a new spare oem stock clutch. I aint to sure what to do when my current clutch gives up with IHI on. Should i use the new spare oem clutch then get an uprated one or just go straight to an uprated one.

"How long is a piece of string"

Anyone hazard a guess to a rough milage a stnd Ibiza 20vt clutch (new one) will last on my car with the stage 3 IHI kit on. I dont do qtr miles or standing starts. Is it worth putting it in ?.

Doubt if it' stripped. Prolly a selector rod issue I would think. Development eh?

Get valves replaced as well if changing engine spec & head.
No point having good bottom end with stock (fragile) top end. When it fails if will destroy the bottom end as well... :hide:

you have been warned!

Ok cheers Bill, I will do.

What valves would you recommend? Sodium filled valves I guess, but what ones specifically?

Anything else I should get done on it whilst its 'open'?

I may well buy another car for road use, and use the Ibiza just for the track.

I guess I'll have all the oil surge problems to look forward to once I get my slicks! :(

Anyway, I spoke to Elton again today (He called me). Just clairified some of the options I've selected etc, and he sent me the latest prices.

One correction to my earlier mail... its not a mk4 Ibiza thats in the week before me, its a Golf.

Starting to get excited now. :D

Now I need to make up my mind about whether to use the Ibiza purely for track or not, so that I can decide what seats and rollcage to fit in it.

Cheers

i'm having a pelequin diff fitted as we speak from autotechniks cost me £600 then fitting is on top.

Interesting. Autotechniks fitted my Quaife (£600 parts and about £600 fitting).

I wonder what Al's opinion will be of the Pelequin compared to the Quaife.

Are they both gear diffs? plate diffs? or what?

How many has autotechnic fitted of each? do they use the cars day to day? The proof is in the pudding as they say :D
