If you get 5w-30 it does, but go for the 0w-40 you get that in 5lt containers, im using it and have done for years, glad it has a very cold rating at the minute with the weather.

Am I right in thinking that something like this:

http://www.mobil-1.co.uk/cms/Mobil_1_0W-40.aspx

would be even better - especially in these weather conditions, as it is more viscous at lower temperatures meaning it would offer better protection for cold starts, but still has the 40 rating for the high temperatures....

surely for ultimate protection, you want an oil which has the largest gap between the two figures, i.e. this 0w 40 oil?

Thats the one Ive been using in my LCR for 3 years now. Winter in Norway (-40c) and summerracing on Nurburgring. No problems whatsoever. Will never change.

Does Mobil 1 still annoyingly come in 4 litres? I never understood that.

I've only seen the 0w40 stuff in 5 litres, although the equivalent 0w-40 castrol edge only seems to come in 4 litres....

I've got some vouchers to use up at halfrauds so was going to get some oil with it - but like you said jon, its annoying only getting 4 litres, hence why I was thinking about the Mobil 1... although the castrol stuff carries VW 503.1 unlike the mobil...

That sounds like a pretty good testemony to the stuff!! Cheers!

how come everyone uses different oil 2 what the dealer recommends? Im new 2 seat scean and dont want 2 put wrong oil in. Dealer say 10w/40 semi is there anything wrong with that? Would 5w/40 fully synthetic shell helix be ok as that wont cost me anything.lol.

wouldnt put anything other than fully synthetic in to be honest mate, id say the 5w40 shell helix would be alright if its free! is this a permenant thing or just one batch you can get for free?

Mobil 1 is excellent oil, no doubt about it but I think the price is artificially over inflated. Kwik Fit will change your oil and filter using Mobil 1 for £50, you can't get the parts for that price and then you've got to pay your 'Kwik-Fit-Fitter'. Quantum Synta Platinum is what SEAT recommends and what they provide their warranties with so it can't be that bad, can it?

Work in a pug dealer and thats what our engines use so when nobody is looking.lol mite just pay dealer price though 4 piece of mind. Heard nasty rumours about premature engine failure caused by wrong oil on these engines, oil pump failure? Seen it on peugeots also.

I've copy/pasted the below text from this link.

"Quantum Platinum is a fully synthetic SAE 5W-40 engine oil for all year round use in applications where an oil of that
viscosity grade and performance level (API SL/CF, ACEA A3/B4/C3) is recommended, in particular high performance
vehicles and those under arduous conditions, such as extended high speed driving, towing and high temperatures.
Quantum Platinum uses an optimised blend of full synthetic base oils and a carefully selected and balanced additive
system. Quantum Platinum is suitable for use in Volkswagen Group Pumpe Düse engines (meets the VW 505 01
specification) on fixed service intervals."

And, even if you pay top whack for it it's still less than £25.

I emailed Opie oils about this, as I have bought stuff off them in the past and they seem to know their stuff - this is the reply I got back

Hi Ben

Officially the oil should meet the VW specs, but as you are out of warranty, there are other oils that don't officially meet the specs, but that is only because they have not been tested for those specs (it can cost £50k to be tested for certain specs, so some manufacturers don't do it to save money). Silkolene Pro S, Motul 300V, Millers CFS, Gulf Competition and Redline oils are very high quality oils that don't have the VW rating, but unofficially exceed it due to their quality. The Mobil 1 Ow-40 is a very good oil too, but for the same sort of money, the ones I mentioned previously are a better choice, especially as none of them officially meet the spec. Apart from the last couple of weeks, the 0w isn't really any advantage over a 5w in the UK as it's not normally cold enough to matter.

This website has all the above listed oils for reference;

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-656-5w-40.aspx

I have halfrauds vouchers to the tune of 60 quid so may well just stick with the mobil 1 stuff for now as thats what they sell in there, but rekon I will be using opie again next time for all the bits and bobs! It's certainly nicer to buy off someone who knows what they're talking about unlike the dipsticks (geddit!) at halfords!

Great response that from Opie Oils... A local motor parts place near me sells Millers Oil for around £22 for 5 litres and I swear by it after using it for years on my MG ZS180.

I'll be changing the oil in my LCR to Millers 5w 30 Fully Synthetic at the next oil change.

I've always bought synta gold/platinum for the same reason as you Jon. always get the car serviced at JBS and i know they use synta platinum so wouldn't want to mix it with other spec or brand. always found it to be a good oil and stays clean for a good while.
