Cheers mate that's great. When I removed the maf housing I looked into the pipe and there is a little thing that the oil breather pipes go to next to the dump valve kinda looks a bit like a dump valve. Well on the inside of the pipes can see where some oil has come through is this a bad thing. What is that thing is it a filter of some sort maybe it needs changing.

Took it out the housing sprayed it all down. Sprayed all the inside of the housing also.
As for the oil in the tip my cone filter looks minging if its that dirty and blocked do you think this would make it suck more oil through the breather pipes.

Put the maf back on and it's running worst than ever popping and spluttering worse than ever virtually undrivable. Unplug the maf and its fine so safe to say I need a new maf.
But when I had the maf off I noticed a lot of gunky oil in the turbo intake pipe. It's coming in through where the crankcase breather pipes go into the turbo intake pipe. This is causing the car to smoke when left for a couple of days. It's ok after it's been run for a while and burnt the oil off. But what could be causing there to be so much gunky oil to go through the breather pipes.
Could it be that I don't know when it was last serviced and it may have had crap oil put in.
The oil on the dipstick is black which I know isn't good.

Help please

Also I noticed there is a little pipe that goes into the turbo intake pipe at the bottom near the turbo this had no jubilee clip on it and just pulled out this was also covered in oil. So I'm imagining so is the turbo.

1. The MAF can be cleaned if it's only slightly dirty. If it went so far, better replace it.

2. The sensor can be pulled from the plastic cylinder by unscrewing 2 Torx screws and then the contact surface inside the sensor can be seen (shiny metal). It can be cleaned with a small stick with cotton wool on the end, dipped in isopropyl alcohol (the same type of alcohol is used to clean camera lenses).

3. The MAF, as it works by electrical resistance, is easily influenced by heat in the very hot engine bay of the 1.8T when the car idles. During normal driving, incoming air cools it enough.

So insulating the MAF housing by wrapping it in some polyfoam or Armaflex material provides smoother idle during very hot weather. This is also why CAI tubes have to be shielded from engine heat to avoid poor MAF reading and occasional CEL light.
