Well my turbo has blown today! Was wondering why my car had started to use oil as it never normally does, but my boost has been acting weird lately and now today it's belching oil smoke out the exhaust and the turbo is screeching when it comes on boost.

CR Turbos just got another job.

so how many miles on it....
oil cooled only one ?
 
Nope, I asked ATP to send one when I first got it and they said it didn't need one, they sent one anyway but it didn't fit the turbo!!! Oil-cooled only yes, the turbo is 2 years old but only has around 6k miles on it, no trackdays either.

.I asked CR Turbos about it and they said normally oil-cooled turbos don't need one but the 1.8T runs pretty high oil pressure (I see 4-BAR + on my oil pressure gauge = 60PSi) so they said they'd fit a 1.5mm restrictor to bring the pressure down to around 30PSi.

The GTRS etc. Elims have built-in oil restrictors, they're water-cooled too.

On my eliminator, it's not built in, it's between the oil line and the turbo.

It would sound like new bearings would sort your problem...........
 
Dunno what the screeching is (if it's metal-to-metal contact then something's gubbed in there!) but at least new oil seals and bearings - plus the rework was going to involve machine the housing, larger compressor wheel, 360 degree thrust bearing, different actuator arm and an oil restrictor, all for around £300.
 
Rob, what about putting a larger turbine wheel in it whilst you are doing?
 
Plan is to have them dis-assemble the turbo and then tell me what's possible with the turbo, I've seen a rebuilt GT2X with a different exhaust wheel before, the guy said it pulled alot hard after being rebuilt.

I'm sure 300bhp should be quite easy given that it is a bigger turbo than a K04. I just don't want larger if it means alot laggier, the GT2X gives me full boost by 3500rpm.

If JBS can extract 300 from an ickle K03S then CR will do it with a GT2X easy.

When I spoke to GT3 he didnt really seem that clued up about 1.8t stuff and big turbos. He was contradicting himself with some of the stuff he was saying and answered some of my questions wrong about fitment and other parts needed. Nice enough guy but I wouldnt get anything from him personally when there are other more knowledgable suppliers.

well its a few hours away from me so yeah, but dont think I will have to take it easy, as it will have already been on the rollers for the custom mapping been given a hard thrashing

I would love to come to Aberdeen for the meet, but think its a bit far:D
 
Jamie I'd ask CR Turbos about an oil restrictor for your turbo, after what happened to mine and what they said to me.

how does this work, and is it easy to fit?

- as in the turbo can stay on and the oil restrictor be fitted as an after thought as I really dont want to incur significant labour costs with it all coming off again:cry:
 
Jamie if you get one that is a male to female thread the same as the hose and turbo all you will need to do is remove the oil hose, make up the restrictor to the turbo. Then make the hose up to the restrictor, you get me??

you are saying this to a not very technically minded person here....but thanks anyway

what is the N112 valve used for, as apparently there is an issue with it at present?

can it not be bypassed like the N249 valve?
