Car is really dirty. sorry, went to collect them yesterday and got stuck behind a horrible dirty lorry that was adament on spraying crap on the car.

i hated them too. i sprayed them myself mate. If you need some advise then let me know and ill try and help.. to get them done it cost me approx £40 maybe £50, against the £200 odd quid i was quoted by a bodyshop

Well ive been thinking about getting the cupra r front and rear bumpers so will only be spraying the side strips. How did you go about doing them?

well
1). Rub down the bump strips as best you can
2). Mask up arounf the strips
3). Spray all strips with a cuple of layers of primer
4). When dry, you can either rub it down slightly , then spray on the colour spray.
5). When the colour spray is dry, spray the strips with a couple of layers of laquer.

I bought all my products from halfords, however, i dont recommend you use the coloured spray from halfords as the match is not very good. Go to a specialist paint store and get them to mix some.

You can run down the laquer to get the desired finish but i was happy with just leaving mine.

Bit of a noob question, but is it ok to rub down the strips so close to the bodywork? Im pretty new to all of this and I don't want to do something stupid and ruin my car
Can you remove the rubbing strips before painting them them? Ive also heard that painting plastic body parts after they have been exposed to the elements makes them more suseptable to paint defects and cracking, how true is this? Would I be more advised to purchase new strips and spray them instead of the ones already on the car?

Sorry for all the questions! :help:

its not idea in my eyes to rub them down on the car. due to the fact you could damage the paint on the door. but if you take your time and mask of the area well it can be done. the only problem you have with the fact that your part are weather so to speak. is you really need to give them a proper clean down with some sort of degreaser/panel wipe. to get rid of all the cack that on them. and one other thinkg use plastic prime as this sticks better than normal primer

this is true, it was a job and a half rubbing down so close to the bodywork. as long as you are carful, then there should be no problems.

Yes you can take them off, but this is a pain and a half, and to be honest, if you are taking them off to paint, you may aswel leave them off, and filll in the gaps..Would look luch better.

The hardest part of any paint ob is the masking off the area. Mine took for ages.

as i sprayed not only the bump strips, but the black arts on the bumpers too. (Right at the bottom)
No problem for the questions, thats why this site is here, is to help others.

Thank you for the advice, and sorry to tread jack :)

Ive decided to purchase the 03' primmed smooth strips and spray them myself, then gunna attach them after. Thought as I hav'nt much experience i dont want to do anything stupid. Also means I dont have to spend ages masking off! And will be good practice for the cupra r bumpers. Quick question though, would it be ok to spray the bumpers at home with a gun? Or more advisable to get a proper spray job being as there large sections of the body work to get wrong? Sorry again for the questions, but you guys are so helpful! ;)

i did all my own spraying as you well know.
I didnt find it that hard to do. the bumper part is probably the easiest thing to do.
the hardest thing is probably finding a paint shop that will do a good match for you. I tried mine on the underside of the bumper. you cant notice it then.

Looking good mate, where did you get the badgless grille from? - do you know if it will fit an LCR? looks nice with it matching the other slats..
