Oil top up

Can anyone advise the correct grade of oil required in the event of top up between sevices for the Mk5 Sportscoupe ? I phoned the dealer who advised vaguely "any synthetic oil".

Not a very satisfactory answer.In the handbook it only gives VW values but how does that translate to 10 W 40 for example ?

Any advice greatly appreciated.Thanks.

In i FR i used 5w-30 full synthetic.
