Just wondering what MPG you get out the mk3?

Mainly:

1.8 petrol
2.0 diesel

Has it improved from the mk2?

Not sure which 2.0 diesel you are considering but if its the 150 PS version you should look at the 1.4 TSI 140PS as well as the 180 PS version.

Traded my 118D BMW (143 PS) in for a 1.4 TSI 5 months ago, don't miss it one bit. The BMW did 48 mpg over the 5 1/2 years I had it. In exactly the same use the Leon has averaged 45.5 mpg which when you factor in the 7 pence a litre difference between petrol and diesel becomes 48 mpg. My fuel costs have remained exactly the same but when asked the 1.4 TSi is way quicker than the 118D.

Try the 1.4, you may be surprised. If not what would you loose.

I have the 1.8tsi and have to say it's the smoothest engine I have ever had, it's just so effortless. I appreciate that the torque figures are well down on the 184tdi but the 0 to 60 figures are the same. I did look at the diesel but don't do enough miles to justify it Did a 150 mile journey at the weekend majotity motorway miles and averaged 47.5 mpg which considering I hAve only done 600 miles am quite pleased with.

Thanks for the info.

Currently got a 1.9cdti astra (150) which gets around mid 40's.

Would normally not have even considered petrol, do about 13k a year, but the new generation seat petrol's seem to have improved.

Is the road tax is quite low for the petrol cars?

Maybe worth thinking about future values...?

In 3 years when you trade in, maybe the diesel will be worth a fair bit more than the petrol?

For example, a 1.4 122ps scirocco i owned cost £16k used. The same diesel 140ps version was £19k for similar age and mileage.

Oh, by the way, ive got the 150 diesel fr and get 52mpg average over the past 6000 miles. I do around 10k per year and thought the diesel was the best option, but each to their own.

As you say it's each to their own, I have had 4 diesels in the past but I was doing a bit more mileage than I do now which is only approx 6000 mil per year and doesn't include many long journeys so for me the choice was pretty easy. I do like diesels though but as I have said before to get the full benefit of the torque you have to drive them hard which in turn reduces mpg where they do come into their own though is on long motorway journeys where fantastic mpg can be obtained. I am really impressed with the 1.8tsi though, the new petrol engines are pretty impressive

Road tax on 1.4 TSi 140 PS is £30 a year, same as my 118D was.

With regards to fuel economy the best I have seen was on a trip to the coast, got just over 52 mpg.

All the mpg figures that I have quoted are calculated and not taken from the dash confuser which is a total liar. It says about 4 mpg more than the truth which is pretty much what the BMW one said as well. Had a Golf once that read 8 mpg higher than the truth.

If I was doing 13,000 miles a year I would still be looking at the diesel but if the diesels are only doing 52 mpg that would only save about £200 a year in fuel compared to my 1.4 TSi. The 150 PS diesel is £2000 more than the 140 PS petrol and I have always estimated I would get 1/2 of the premium back in 5 years when I sell the car (never been far out with that), that's £1000 extra then. So in 5 years I would just get the £1000 back in fuel savings.

Close call.

Thinking about it I would still get the 1.4 petrol, superb engine. No DPF to worry about either.

Was quite impressed after a 22mile trip out through some A and B roads as well as a couple of towns, after I arrived home and switched from Nav back to radio the MFD said I'd managed 59.1mpg and that was with AC and some use of the rear window heater, I know not totally accurate but that's the highest I've seen so far.

Well maybe cause for concern.

Even if you calculate mpg manually unfortunately you still have to use the car's mileage, and I assume that will vary depending on your tyre pressures!! That's why "proper" tests use a fifth wheel for data collection.

I use any calculated figure ( mine or the cars) as an approximation, but what I do look at is how MY figures change, not as an absolute against other peoples.

My mpg below was 41.4, but after a motorway trip up north when I was registering over 50 I am pleased to see the average increase to 44.1.

I have checked the cars odometer against the distance recorded by our Garmin and its almost spot on, over a 200 mile trip it read 201 miles. I have previously checked the Garmin with the motorway markers and AA AutoRoute distances and its spot on.

The mpg figures I have quoted for my Leon have taken this (small) discrepancy into account.

A few more examples of odometer accuracy (or inaccuracy). Golf same 200 mile trip odometer used to read 210 miles. Focus was spot on at 200 miles. Wifes Kia Ceed reads 193 miles. These were checked several times since we make the trip several times a year over the exact same route.

All the cars were on the OEM wheels and tyre sizes.

The inaccuracy of the odometer on the Golf and Ceed makes quite a difference to the calculated mpg figures. On the trip the Golf used to calculate as a truly excellent 60 mpg, corrected it fell to 57 mpg, still excellent but obviously not as good. The Ceed calculates as 55mpg on the same trip, corrected that increases to 57 mpg. So the 2 cars actually return virtually identical mpg figures after correction whereas before the Gold looks like its way more economical.

For the record only done the trip once in the 1.4 TSi Leon so far, computer said 56 mpg, calculation said 52 mpg. Incredible for a petrol.

Tyre pressure makes a tiny difference, if any, providing you are within the recommended range.

From what I have read on here I would be all over the petrol unless I was doing 15 mile + trips most of the time. I love my 184 tdi and I get 70mpg+ on my commute if I take it easy but it does take a good 10 miles to heat up and start geting over 50mpg.

+1!

p.s love the new picture!

Thanks :), surrealistic HDR toning.

I thought I better login to the computer and update my signature as the car has not been on order for a while now! Just setting up this fuelly thing.

10 miles? That seems excessive. My 1.4TSI is up to temperature in about 1 mile or less.

Yes i'm not joking. I have driven 15 miles mixed roads and the oil was still not up to temp. At a constant 60/70 it takes about 10 miles from stone cold. Once the oil is up to 90-100 it will do 80mpg at a constant 60mph though.
