Are square plates legal?

I thought not, except on JAP imports but I can't find any info to back it up.
Must have dreamt that square plates are only acceptable on:

4x4
LGV
Motorbikes
JAPs

Unless anyone can confirm this?

And dirty little scrotes can easily pinch them and drive through speed cameras causing you grief

That comment made me laugh - its ages since I've heard term 'Scrotes'
