Model Year 22/23 Servicing

Had the Aircon service done after two years as they advised was due. But I'm on a service plan so did not question, although did think to myself is it really necessary when I've only done 9k miles.

My VZN less than 2 years old, today I booked car for my 3rd service.
Very strange thing they said aircon service which I rejected. As there was price associated.
So went for only oil / oil filter 263£ and Haldex 125£
Now this is new air-conditioning service, has anyone been told this is now part of service if I don't get it done it will spill into next service?
This is pure money making tactics as far as I think.

I used to own a VW and VW‘s service advisors always used to try and ‘encourage‘ customers to buy the air con service, but it was never a chargeable part of the standard service. The air con service was a VW recommendation, not a requirement to maintain the car’s warranty in force so I adopted the approach that if the air con was working efficiently, I‘d decline the air con service.

Whether this has now changed I don’t know as I’m no longer a VW owner.

My Leon has had it's 3rd annual service back in May, I was not asked if I wanted the aircon serviced and with my previous Leon 280, I only had the aircon done at 5 years as it was still working fine.

At two years old your vehicle is due an air conditioning service and brake fluid change, it's been that way for quite some time.

R134a and R1234yf are recommended every 2 years and R744 every 4 years.

I always worked the basis of 3 years.

It used to be the first at 3 years then every 2 years thereafter.

It went to the first at 2 years then every two years back in 2018.

My VZN is 2 years old and when I recently had it serviced (Oil service) they recommended I had the air con service I decided to have it done as next time it will be a full "kerching" inspection service so the air con has been done but I have no doubt the cost of the service will still be the same!

Maybe will get air-conditioning done next time. To me its a sealed unit if its working fine its working fine.
I don't think there is any serviceable part there. Unless its faulty or there is some refrigerant topup. But 200£ plus for that is a bit absurd.

The system suffers natural leakage of refrigerant through seals and valves to the point it just won't function anymore. It can be up to 20% a year on some vehicles.

Having the refrigerant changed and the oil replenished helps to rejuvenate the seals, lubricate the compressor etc.

If they do that all then its worth. Compressor oil etc. I usually don't leave the aircon dead. Even in winters give it a go for sometimes so oil and refrigerant circulate.

You tend to find on modern A/C systems that it's always on to some degree, it's just such a small amount (1-5%) that it's barely unnoticeable and has very little impact.
It keeps things moving and prevent component failure.

I formerly owned:
- Skoda Superb Estate Mk2 for 6.5 years and 119000km
- Audi Q3 Mk1 for 9 years and 165000 km
- Skoda Superb Estate Mk3 for 7.5 years and 136000 km.
On all of them, air con was on all the time. Never had to have it serviced or replenished. They all kept delivering cool air even by high temp over 35-40C.
Thus, I don’t plan to have our Formentor air con serviced, if it still works fine.

I dunno, keeping systems on a vehicle working at their optimum performance, so drivers don't experience any type of failure seems like a pretty justifiable reason to have small, additional and completely optional jobs done

Imagine the other side of the coin if it wasn't recommended? Possible brake fade and air con failures all round, once again, the dealer would be the bad guy.
