On Tuesday on the M1 came up behind a Evo VIII and wondered if I could keep up with this guy if he tried to pull away. Big mistake!! We came out of some road works and he gunned it and left me standing. Thought I would at least have a bit of a chance between 40 and ... I won't be doing that again - I'll leave that one to the Revo'd boys.

and what did you expect mate?!?

Really?! I mean thought you had a chance!?!? ;)

Well I thought I had 3 chances - slim, fat and no chance!! But it was worth a try!! More curious to see what an extra 15,000 grand can buy you.

There a great car, the only thing thats a problem with them is theft. I do very few miles now, less than 6k a year so i should be okay with one, a IX with add on's at 300bhp + the wheels is a good bet for all round peformance.

Not sure if new as had personalized plates - Not too clued up on the Evo - it was definitely an VIII.

Its the older stuff you have to watch, from the 6 backwards.

Not so sure about that - VIII MR comes in a higher state of tune 'out of the box'. On an MR320 EcuTek remap will get you 350+bhp with no other mods  IX GT is even better - basic mods (exhaust, induction etc and remap) will see near to 400bhp. You need to spend a fair bit more on earlier Evo's to get this sort of power.

Knigh - you were  in the wind :D

Having spoken to several RR guys they all seem to agree the Evos give what they say on the tin. Never had the chance to go up against one with my old car, but i'd have been happy to give it a crack against the faster versions.

In my chipped Leon FR now I'd be left for dead though - traction in the first two gears is non existent from a start, and in the wet the light flashes in 3rd too, by which time the Evo is on the other side of the solar system. Even from a rolling start 300lb ft might only stay with it for a second or two before it pulls away convincingly. The Leon tdi (+chip) will stay with standard turbo imprezas (non STI, or at least I haven't tried one yet) comfortably when on the move. Until we get to a corner :p

Evo... Would I have one?

I'd love one, but would not have one - that whole 'will I be carjacked at the next traffic lights, or get my house broken into for the keys after being followed home' thing would put me off, plus servicing @4500 miles, which is nuts.

Scoobies (well, the faster ones anyway) have much the same ability as the Evo, but not the same 'image' or 'want-one-ness' (heh ummm new word for Oxford English dictionary) in my opinion as the Evo.

Group 20+ insurance might put me off as well - been there, done that wallet still suffering...

The older stuff, there lighter, and there not covered by warrantys anymore, most have been modded. The biggest scare i have had was not the fq400 but the older Evo's the ones before the Evo4 i never got to see which one it was exactly i was to busy banging the ibiza upto 7800rpm in every gear trying to stop it making ground on me.

While its easy to tune the mr's and IX's and fq400 other than a decat how many in grand scheme actually tune the car while its under warranty, there the same as us while your cars under warranty you try and play it safe, once its out of warranty you start to tune more heavily.

Which Ibizas produce the most power the mk3's or the mk4's on here. Its down to no more warranty and developed kits that fit. Just my 2p.

Given I have been IHI'd for nearly 3 years on a 4 year old car I was well inside warranty :) (and used it)

As for the chase tho... if the diesel leon had of kept going at it, the EVO would have run out of fuel and then he would have been easy to pass then :p 45ltr tank and sub 20mpg, case closed LOL

Quite a few modded VIII's on the MLR - agreed these are probably not an accurate reflection of Evo ownership in general. Evo's are pretty strong mechanically so tuning up to 370-380bhp shouldn't be a problem warranty wise. All imports don't have a warranty anyway and quite a few VIII's came in this way. Some tuners provide their own warranties on upgrades. All IX GT's are imports (not available through CCC) so I bet most of these will be modded fairly quickly.

My MR is running 355bhp and 356lbs/ft of torque (RR figures FWIW) with just an EcuTek reflash - the MR320 has an HKS exhaust and hard pipe kit anyway as part of the FQ package. EcuTek is (supposedly) undetectable by the dealer so I imagine quite a few cars still under warranty will have this. I had a VI before the MR and spent a lot more tuning it to get similar power figures. Standard import VIII's are reckoned to be around 310-315bhp (IX's maybe a bit more) so you are starting from a higher base when tuning.

Some quick early Evo's though - for example there's an Evo III on the MLR running around 480bhp. Mainly a track car but road legal - can't imagine there's much around that could live with it :D

tell you what don't take on the metro 6r4 looka like in southend area, I sat at a set if lights near rayleigh the other week, and when they changed, it blew away the evo 8 sitting in the right hand lane, it was round the next roundabout before the 8 was down the hill, and the evo had left me for dead in the cupra.

and i was only trying to see where the metro had gone, i knew i never had a chance with the 8, the metro, well it was obviously not just a look a like

Just to cheer you boys up, i slayed 2 Evo 8's Gsr's Yestersay. One in the am, one in the Pm. After i kicked the arse of the one in the pm's arse i came up behind a yellow Ibiza cupra (CC Just by chance) i gave him a flash of the lights and the Evo got its arse kicked by him as well while i sat and watched. It was a nice blue 05 plate Evo8. Am one was silver, and it was the same car from when i had been doing some vag com logs last week (see vag com section).

I suggest you get yourself down to Jabba with your Ibizas and Leons and get yourself a Vf34 or a Pe1820f.

Very different driving experience... I know all to well about modding Ibiza's to make them handle better. It's never going to be the car I want though!

I know m8 as a road car, but on track they're as doable as any other in my experience. Where they dont have a power advantage they still only have 4 wheels in contact with the ground.

I like EVO's and would want one as they're raucous.. Was very impressed with one I had a ride in FQ260? - top bit of kit.
