The mk4 did have a bit of class to it (even if the Leon's a more obvious sporty proposition)...

But this was ruined by (deep breath) Mum-insured, 1.4s with (yawwwn) 18 inch RS4 alloys that were sooo common that i started to believe they were standard issue...:ban:

looks wise mk4 is better than leon as standard but my03 cupra and r much better looking vehicles toledo v bora, bora wins.
mk4 critics said gti became a spec level not a flagship due to 2.0 and 150 1.8t although i believe 180 1.8t was availble b4 anniversary not sure how they worked that though.
1.8t engine so many specs, lcr same set up as s3 n tt by throttle body,turbo and twin intercoolers, stronger block n pistons although tt also came with 180 version
 
lupo gti would make the golf look silly cos its a 125bhp 1.6 in a 1000kg body, lcr also suffers from more lag than lc obviously down to the set up so chipped golf n lcr would be close on paper perform completely different on road or track

My car has the full Recaro interior and unfortunately it was not a Anniversary model so I had to improve it's conservative looks for my own desire.
My track car I sold therefore the Golf was a good base to improve.
It is now on par if not quicker than on Cupra R especially on track with what I've done to the car.
It has been quite costly even though I am still using s stock turbo.

Buying a Cupra R initially some 5 years ago would have been the right way to go as the car has such a better spec. Having said that it would have cost me more than a new Golf.

Modding cars certainly is ok when you intend keeping the car but it is a finacial loss if selling. The MK4 Golf certainly suffered with large scale production and company car usage. The MK5 GTI seems to be a better resolved car but at a cost.


The mechanicals on the 1.8T can always be improved.

Everyone seems to be getting the wrong end of the stick. My brother has the early Golf 4 GTI which came with 150bhp. It was chipped by AMD to 196bhp then he added the high flow cat and system by Miltek so it is around the 210 mark. My LC is as quick off the mark due to the lower ratios in the 6 speed box. I cannot believe that the more lag of the LCR would make it any slower as this would defeat the purpose of making the LCR as it would then be slower than the LC????
 
the lag of the lcr would only cause it to lose out using low revs, drivin the lc n lcr has made it obviouse how much lag there is, in a drag race the lcr would diminish the difference the lag would cause by how much grunt u get when the turbo comes in, but on the track i believe the lcr would be the more inspirin to drive but to get the jump out the corner u would need to be at at least 3200 rpm
 
whenever they mentioned the leon on top gear they never seemed to have a good thing to say about it. if i remember correctly they put a LCR up against some other hatches and richard hammond called it something like the seat leon cupra thingy. i can't see why they seem to dislike it as i've always thought the LCR was worthy of a feature on top gear. :(

Now, in terms of power, the Remapped Golf would be the exact same as an LCR for straight line performance. The only time you'll notice a difference, is when the speed rises to double the speed limit.
Other than this, there nearly identical for performance.
 
I turned down a Mk4 Golft GTi 180, Anniversary for a Leon. My opinion after several test-drives in the Golf was that it had bad handling.

In standard form, I believe the Leon would take the edge time and time again, in fact, it'd out-perform and steal precious distance everytime there was a corner.

Just looking at some of the above I am lost for words. How can the Golf GTi with it overly praised chassis and grip be SO far behind the LCR when it puts its power down so much better. OK so there is weight and the issue of 25 horses at play but even still, from all the hype you would expect the Golf to be able to match the Leon as the Civic has done.
