Thinking about a Cupra...

Hi all,

I've been thinking for the past few days about possibly upgrading to a Cupra 1.8 20V T Cupra (180bhp), though only one thing is a slight concern... What is the average MPG that people achieve from these cars? Some of you may know that my current car is a 52 plate Leon S 1.6 16v, I do around 130 miles a week which mainly consists of commuting to/from work, and the odd journey into and around the surrounding areas where I live and by my calculations I roughly 38mpg on average and spend around £30 a week on fuel.

Now I know that if I move to a Curpa , fuel costs will jump significantly but I just want some sort of idea of what MPG guys you get in yours?

If I do decide to go ahead and look for one, what are the important things to look out for on these cars mechanically (being an existing Leon owner, I'm aware of things like the common leaking seals lol).

Thanks all - Liam

I get about 33 on average but its not hard to get higher if your doing a fair amount of motorway as I do. I can if I keep to 70 get 40mpg.
£30 of v power gets me around 150 miles.
Overall I would say that the 180 engine can be more economical than we think!!!!!
20v t is prone to coil packs and breather pipes perishing and its a must to keep them serviced properly as the oil pick up strainer can block leading to oil starvation.
If I drive carefully I can see 30mpg round town too.

Thanks for that, very helpful.

Would it be best to go for one that is a 6 speed, as opposed for the 5 speed ones?

Lastly, I've read that prices for these cars are very up and down at the moment - but do any of you have a price range for a really looked after one? preferably one that is from 2001-2002.

Thanks - Liam

There are no five speed... all six speed gearboxes on the LC.

01-02 in pre-facelift ... mint with low miles around £2k. Yes you can get cheaper but it will be an average example at best.

Buy on condition not mileage.

To state the obvious it depends entirely on how you drive it. I get around 32 on average on my standard LC 180, that includes a good balance of town and country driving although no motorway driving. If im thrashing it around town I get 20 - 25 (or less) but I can easily get 40 (think Iv had 45 once) sitting at 55 - 60 on the country roads.

Thanks for the advice,

From taking a look at places like AutoTrader etc. there are not many of them about at the moment, so it looks like it may take me some time to find a decent one!

With the miles your doing your probably looking at 40-50 pound a week. It will be less on the first weeks of owning it ;)

I do similar mileage as you a week and fill up 30-35 quid a week and thats a mixture of taking it easy and booting it

Don't mean to be a **** but I always lol a little bit when I see the letters MPG followed by 1.8 20VT Cupra.

It's turbocharged, it's not meant to be economical, I'm lucky enough (if you can call it that) to have the use of the tube to commute to work so my LCR is purely used as a toy for my days off, but if I had to commute I wouldn't hesitate in buying a diesel!

When buying my LCR, even though more powerful than the earlier Cupra's, fuel economy didn't even enter my thoughts because if you can't afford to put fuel in it, then more thank likely you'll have problems maintaining it too. :)

But if you do buy one, check for the cambelt!!

Ive been very close to 45mpg, i was aiming for it, but got around 44.6mpg or something, same as you sitting 55-60 when ever possible on a standard 2004 LC

Me personally i dont think about mpg any more and when i need petrol it gets filled none of this putting a tenner in crap.

But It is easy to say a cupra is not about mpg or you shouldn't think about fuel economy when buying a cupra. Some people want that performance but also need it to fit into a budget. Better to check mpg values rather than buying it then realising you can't afford to run it.

Yh agreed, i've got the 180bhp cupra and if mpg is a concern then don't get one. I put 40 quid in on monday. I've driven about 20 sensible miles to work and back, and about 15 miles full attack on the duel carriageways, (private ones obviously) roundabout to roundabout, putting some clio and corsa driving boy racers in their rightful place! That easily used about £20-£25 worth of v-power. No point having one if you're just gonna drive it like a granny. And as soon as you drive it like a man then you're going to be stopping at shell pretty quickly :)

Yer agreed.

The biggest mistake you can make is working out if you can afford to run one based on what it CAN return.

I have seen 40mpg out of my LCR, if I drive it sensibly I will see low 30s on a normal drive somewhere, but is that the overall average? Is it ****.

By the end of my tank, I'm lucky if I've seen 26mpg.

Work out if you want one based on what you're likely to return, not what you can return is my advice man.

Same here only time I ever put a tenner in is if I'm already just under a full tank and need a top up for a long journey!

as much as people mention the 20vt wasnt designed for ecomony, its a damn economical engine considering

at worst ive managed 210 miles to a tank

at best ive had a proven 415 miles to empty - to fumes empty it would push 420

so considering 200 bhp plus with stage 1, you'll still manage 36-40mpg driven off boost,

all this shouldnt buy a turbo blah blah bollocks, 330ci's are quick cars, but most are rolling at 65-70 om the motorways to see a good return, time & a place.

If you worried about fuel then a cupra is probably not for you :).

To be honest its not that bad. I put £35 of supreme in and managed to get 150 miles round town. (Driving sensibly and every now and then having some fun). Out of a full tank i get around 300-350 miles. Mine is a stage one revo and to be honest i haven't noticed a difference in fuel since having it mapped.

As someone said before the first few weeks it will drink fuel as its far to tempting to put your foot down.

To be honest i went from a mk2 golf and didn't think i would be able to afford a 20v t but you soon find the money :)

Oh and as far as finding the money is concerened you do, but if money is a concern then finding this website is the worst thing that could have happened to you. I only came on here to get advice on leaking door seals, I now have spent hundreds on mods and have an even longer list of ones to come!! Damn you all !
