here's my version

Tramlining is the tendency of a vehicle's wheels to follow the contours in the surface upon which it runs. The term comes from the tendency of a car's wheels to follow the normally recessed rails of street trams, without driver input in the same way that the train does.

Tramlining can usually be blamed on tires, and its incidence depends greatly on the model of tire and its state of wear. Although not normally dangerous, at very high speeds it can become a source of instability.


Vehicles with large and wide low profile tyres are more prone to the effects as well as vehicles which have wheels fitted that are larger than the manufacturers recommendation or have reinforced sidewalls. People who are relatively inexperienced with driving with this tendency will feel that they have to make continual course corrections and it is very easy to overcompensate the steering, which could potentially lead to veering off the road especially if the road is a narrow track/country road.

The effects of tramlining can be eased by subjecting the vehicle to an inspection and calibration of the wheels (ie. a full geometry check) or replacing the tyres with non-reinforced (soft sidewall) tyres.

I never really knew why they put 225x45's on the facelift LCs. the rims are only 7j and tramline badly. a 215 would of been a better choice.

As for the 7.5j cupra R rims why would you want to go thinner? is it for economy?

I thought that... until I measured the width of the wheel... they are 8inch wide!!! :confused:
 
How did you measure the rim width?

As above it's done from the inside faces of the rim/tyre seat. That could account for a 1/2" measurement 'error'

That would make sense... I measured from edge to edge on the starfish alloy and that is bang on 8 inch wide.
 
I thought the same when I bought my 8.5"s thought I'd been sent a set of 9's.
 
You sure? I thought they were 7.5j hence the 225 tyre?

I agree... there is no way a manufacturer such as SEAT would put a 225 tyre on a 7inch wide rim...

It's worth noting the 16inch rims found on the pre facelift cupra are 7inch wide with 205 tyre...

I reckon 7.5 wide :)
 
I'm sure there 7j. I'll check tonight as there sat in my cellar gathering dust.
 
proof of the pudding. Its stamped on the rim behind the centre caps. Too thin for 225's imo.

I've just measured one of my 18" lcr rims and its 1/2" wider than my starfish rims. It measure's 8.5" across

They starfish alloys look physically thinner just by looking at them.

Don't think that the wheel makers would stick the wrong technical spec on their rims :p

Edit. just to add, you need to take the measurement from the most inner bead in the rim not the inside of the outer rim

Yeah mate I know hence why I said measure them... I noticed it said 7J on my rims so got the tape measure out as thought no way can a 225 tyre go on a 7J and edge to edge its 8 inch.... inner bead to inner bead is 7.5J as just checked :D:lol:
