So I fitted the big old jetex filter at lunch time and drove to work with it. Definitely sounds louder especially from inside. It feels a bit laggier for some reason and I don't know if it's just me, but the car feels slower too especially acceleration in 2nd/3rd gear. Has any one else had this problem?

Re. your Jetex, it could just be your ECU adapting to the extra airflow. Changing certain things relating to induction or fuelling don't always make immediate differences, the ECU "learns" certain parameters and adjusts things gradually rather than all at once, as a safety feature.

You can force the car to erase it's stored adaptions by disconnecting the battery for about half an hour or so. When you start running the car again it won't have any history of operating conditions such as airflow, timing pull etc. Otherwise just give it a few days to adjust to the change and you should feel a difference.

Some people say that you will still lose a little response low down when changing to a cone filter from the stock airbox, the usual argument is that the airbox is pressurised. I'm not sure how it can be pressurised but if there is a difference in low end grunt I can't say I really notice it.
 
Thanks 8 bit. I was just thinking about the ECU before I read your reply, as I saw someone mention they were adaptive. Maybe I will disconnect it for a bit while I'm at work. I was driving it for about 30 mins to work and it got progressively louder so maybe it is adapting and 'wearing in'. Maybe it is just me then regarding acceleration, the only way to tell is take it for a boot when the weather is dry again.

No worries. Even if you have lost a little torque low down you'll get used to it - when I'm out for a proper blast I tend to keep the engine spinning quickly so I don't drop below the spool point for the turbo so I wouldn't really notice a slight loss low down anyway :)

Yeh that's what I try to do too when booting it, I'm sure I can put up with a little loss low down. Will make up for it with all the other mods :D
 
Forgot to order the damn red coupler and clips to push the cone out a bit, so ordering that ASAP from badger5.

The whole tip/maf/filter section seems a bit flimsy to me, would a better silicone tip make it a bit more solid?
 
Not really, you'd need to find some way of supporting it. Some people (myself included) have used a Jabbasport heatshield for this, it looks nice in the engine bay too and some will claim it reduces heatsoak into the intake air from the engine bay (although the benefits of that are debateable).

I went for the Jabba one as it looks nicer than clamps, clips etc. and with limited tools and engineering knowledge I wasn't easily going to be able to design and fabricate something of my own. See below:

Hmm, I was thinking about getting a jabba heatshield but it's going to have to wait until next payday. I've got more important things to get this month like new tyres! Those heatshields do look nice, the only thing that puts me off is the price :( £90 for a bit of metal is bloody expensive, but like you said I'd rather get somethin prefab that does a job and looks good, than makes something myself that looks crap.

It is an expense, yes but look at it this way - they sell the shield, filter, short bit of alloy and silicone and the jubilee clips as an all-you-need induction kit for about £250, buying the bits yourself elsewhere apart from the shield saves you about £100...

Have a read of the thread though, you might find some alternative means in there that you can do yourself :) If you've already ordered the alloy and silicone hoses then when that arrives, fit them in such a way that you have the cap on the filter pushed against the inside of the n/s wing to keep it from moving about. Mine was fitted like that for about 5 months... :)
 
I'm working my way through the 23 pages now :lol: Those jabba induction kits are a total rip off, doing it this way might make me feel a bit better about spending £90 on a piece of metal with a sticker on it :D

Heatshield is lower priority than tip, dv tyres and service so I think I'll take your hint and leave mine that way for a while too :)
 
Jabba heatshield looks awesome though mate, is well made and fits in the bay like a glove ;)

I want to colour some of the interior plastic trims, starting with the inside door handle to match the platinum grey paint job. Would a spry paint be suitable as long as I got the colour matched?
