Thought I'd at change the thermostat while I wait for a tool to arrive. Since I've lost some coolant, I'm not going to miss any more that comes out when I take the old one out. Looks like doing it properly means taking the alternator out.

Thanks for the good wishes - I'm visualising the bolt coming out easily once I get the right tool on it.

Or else it gets the hacksaw.

It got the hacksaw in the end. You'd think the car would have learnt by now, but I do have to remind it who's in charge sometimes.

Funny to think how much this kind of thing used to scare me - it all seemed a bit too advanced. Now I've got a (slightly off centre) freshly cut thread and a couple more broken drill bits.
