Why would anyone buy a petrol over a diesel these days?

G60 springs to mind. Chargers were notably short lasting by VW standards hence the move to the 1.8t

But the G60 was developed over 17 years ago. That was before Intel had even released the Pentium. I think technology has moved on since then. And I would expect VW to not repeat the same problems as they have with coil packs.

I would expect most petrol cars to have turbo’s in the near future. It seems a viable way to improve a petrol engine, and not just for performance. Many makers are switching to turbo’s, Peugeot, the next Mini, BMW, Mercedes is moving from supper chargers to turbo’s. But the new VW seems to have the best of both worlds. And they’d also only probably release the 1.4 first, as they wouldn’t want to ruin their marketing opportunity of it by releasing a 2 litre then a 1.4 would they.

Yes you will see many more small capacity turbo engines from all manufacturers.
Some will just use tiddly turbos for emissions and some will actually go quite well.
A small turbo engine will have better driveability than a multivalve N/A engine.
The small capacity engine will have less frictional losses etc and spin up quickly too, better economy, better emissions and possibly less weight.
Probably see more 3 cylinder motors too.

Let's hope the 1.4 TSI ends up in the (next generation?) Fabia/Polo/Beezer with improved chassis dynamics and less weight than the current generation Golf etc platform.

Back from the dead
I've owned a Revo'd diesel Ibiza TDI FR130 between two remapped LCR's.

As an around town hack I found I could get a lot more on demand power from the diesel FR than the LCR which can sometimes be a little slow to react. Being Revo'd did make a considerable difference to the Beeza diesel but it smoked like a beeeeatch on full tilt, and felt front end heavy. It was always running out of revs, and I felt I was always working the gears. It did stink, sounded rough as feck on a cold morning, but on balance she wasn't bad. I'll still like a 160bhp Cupra as a second car in the garage for shopping trips where I don't want to be looking at 18.1mpg on inefficient journeys.

I did think of getting a Cupra/FR TDi Leon when I eventually bought the new LCR. I just love driving revvy petrol cars, the fun of modding petrol cars and lets face it a remapped LCR isn't far off the torque of a diesel anyway (I think mines over 300lb/ft which will do on OE clutch). Diesels don't sound sexy either - they predominantly power agricultural vehicles for a reason, and despite how good the PD diesels are today you don't see manufacturers rushing out to put V8/10/12/16 diesels in their Veryons etc...

I'm glad I've had one, and I'd have one as a second car as I do see the benefits, but I'm back in a petrol despite the cost because if you don't really consider the cost then there's only really one choice.

after having a drive in the audi a8 diesel, I have a renewed respect for diesels. That is a serious vehicle and damn quick to. Lovely car.

Unfortunatly diesels are the engine of choice in the future, the fuels higher calorific value, makes it inherently more fuel efficent than petrol, which will make it more and more popular with buyers and car manufacturers. Power delivery is a problem though. But you got to love an engine that can you run on kebab shop chip fryer oil.

"Give me a medium donner, chips and 25 liters opti-fry " :cartman: :cartman:

Which A8 engine one was this?
big diesel (V10 :D ) and auto box would make for a wall of torque to throw you down the road if my S8's anything to go by..

big diesels are still relative thirsty tho from what I've heard.. (beemers)

I am very happy with my diesel, so glad I chose it over a petrol.

Who needs a man when you can have torque!

I can picture the smile on your face, sitting at those traffic lights with those Diesel vibes going through you......! :cheeky: :runaway:
