Cars up for it's MOT soon are these bushes supposed to be like this or are they knackered?

Yup they are showing signs of cracking - its only the two webs that are meant to be intact - the bits at the sides that have been rubbing are just meant for that purpose. Also yup only get Ibiza Cupra TCA rear bushes fitted - the p/n must start with 6LL if they try to sell you anything else say NO!! By the way, strange as it might seem, UK MOT will probably not get failed while they are in that condition - I'd think that they would need to be completely torn for you to get a failure on that item.

I know little to nothing about bushes, but would like to learn. Where is the cracking, I cant see any there? And are those the rear bushes?

Have a look at the last two pictures, the lower (rubber) web is showing signs of starting to crack or tear - maybe look up near the top (of the lower vertical web) of the second last picture and you will see a ragged dark line - also the same point on the last picture. Yes these are the famous TCA rear voided bushes (the voids are the holes or places where there is no rubber - just fresh air - the Ibiza Cupra bushes are solid so never get this problem)

Thanks, I can see it now! Is it a difficult to change them?

Oh yes, I'd say it is, especially to fit the Cupra bushes, one thing to remember, these bushes get fitted into aluminium assembles called consoles - so its easy to crack them and so reduce them to scrap. Tread warily if you are not a DIY expert - I do lots to my cars but went the indie VAG specialist route for this job as complete four wheel re-alignment is next job that you will need to get done - so why make life really nasty for yourself.

Thanks for answering that's took a weight off my shoulders thought the two bits had separated.

A lot depends on the tester - much of the MOT is a matter of opinion. Ours failed (at a SEAT dealership) at 4yrs/34K miles - they said one of the bushes had excess movement, yet the other side was fine.

Dealer has special tool for changing them so doesn't need alignment redoing. Tried to get SEAT to pay but not interested. I think they should be embarrassed that the car failed MOT so young but the dealer just sees it as a chance to bend you over.

That's a really good guide well found matey , I think I may have a go at changing mine in the near future see if it helps some of the knocking noises I've been getting from the car.

the knocking noises might just be your drop links as it was with mine, about £15 aach and dead easy to fit:).

i found when my bushes went it was more of a creaking noise when starting and stopping than a knocking sound.

I did mine. Pretty hard job! Note it's easier to take off the console when doing this. Only a handful of bolts and makes the job SO much easier! Also every bolt I took off went back in EXACTLY the same place so I don't know why people say you need four wheel alignment doin. Although think i'm gettin mine done soon anyway as replacing bent inner tie rod this weekend.

The fact of the matter is that these cars, or the basic platform, was designed by Skoda and as such was made to be easy to adjust during initial assembly - so a lot of fixing points are not dowelled or use shouldered bolts for exact re-assembly. Even VAG are meant to use a kit of indexing dowel pins when the cross member is dropped. Taking off the TCA mounting consoles means that you lose alignment at that point as well. The car will drive "okay" even if you don't re-align everything - ie rear wheels to front wheels + side to side camber equalising, but it will never feel spot on until it has been trued up and will suffer exessive uneven tyre wear. Any techs that say four wheel re-alignment is not needed after this job will only be saying so as they can not perform this task. BTW, as far as I know, even the VAG dealers remove the consoles to remove and replace the bushes. A non VAG tooling kit for "on the car" servicing these bushes used to be available - but probably there was not enough demand - so its "gone".

Somebody has mentioned that to me before but I've never had time to check it out, thanks for the advice though dude, I will have to have a look at these at some point as it's really annoying me and the dealers can't seem to fix the problem.

Nah they quoted me £250 to get a four wheel alignment done! I doubt they'd include it at no extra cost if they were just replacing your bushes.
