Hi all, Ive been in other threads discussing this in the past, as they'd just come up so thought id start my own dedicated thread to putting a Car PC in the Beeza. Which i have now sucessfully done.

So i thought id show off my ride, sorry if this should be in general section. Basically i love cars especially my Ibiza and Im an IT technician by trade, so im into my computers. I thought of merging the two together and came up with this:

If anyone is wanting to put a PC in their car and want some advice then by all means please drop me a line and I`ll see what advice i can give.

So what is my ibiza? Well as specced out in my sig, Ibiza FR Tdi with custom code, pd160 air intake, cotton air filter for performance, and tinted windows and a nice paint job on alloys and door bump strips to make the car look a bit nicer :)

And the car PC... Well its a 1ghz machine with A1 ATX Automotive powersupply, 512MB ram and 250GB hard drive, loaded with mp3s and videos :) (which of course i legally own  ). The front end software allows easy navigation with the touch screen to choose which track / movie you want to play.

Its also got Vag Com in there too, so i can turn custom code on and off to my leisure and see what the engines doing and stuff with vagscope as im driving.

I have the car2pc adaptor in which basically makes the standard alana head unit think the car PC is a CD Changer. This brings the sound through by pressing CD6 button and you can skip tracks and fast forward etc by the steering wheel controls of the ibiza. (well thats a bit limited but im currently bug fixing that with the maker of car2pc so hopefully that`ll be fully functional soon)

Ive got a wifi card in it and an extra aeral on the roof with a 7db gain. This allows me to pick up my own network and other 'open' networks whilst parked up to get the internet, talk back to my own PC etc. When the car comes home it connects to my own network automatically and copies off any new mp3s ive downloaded / bought off my pc :) Which is nice :D

It does have a GPS in it as well, however im not really using that as such yet. Im trying to find some decent software to log what the GPS is doing to a file and then upload it when it can. Kinda like a primitive sat nav system, or just be nice to have a log to see where the cars been and where it was and when.

My Smartphone PDA, a fujitsu siemens T830 connects up to it and gets charge off it, via USB cable. Which basically means i can get the carpc online from anywhere using the 3G capabilities of the T830. The T830 itself does push email from exchange so will flash up new emails as im driving. I want to get the audio from t830 through the car pc at some point too.

Ive got a few other misc stuff, like a microphone connected in the beeza for making voice over IP calls when in the range of the internet. Works well. The automotive power supply detects the ignition signal and will auto hibernate the PC and turn off USB devices after so many minutes of pulling the key out, and then booting it back up again when i restart the engine.
The screen is a touch screen which i finally got working well. I also have a wireless keyboard in the glove box for typing and more complex stuff.
Theres various other bits installed, Amiga Emulator, N64 emulator for games (whilst parked of course). a few networking tools, etc. All good.

As for ICE im just running standard Ibiza Head unit and have mounted a 10" sub and amp in the boot too. Thats all, but it sounds pretty good. The sub causes the seats to vibrate which is good enough for me :p

Ive posted more pictures in my yahoo pictures:

Anyway hope no one here thinks im showing off. Its just been a long project of mine, probably taken over a year or to get it as neat and integrated as possible. Theres always bits to do, i want a false floor in the boot now to hide wires! Anyway if anyones interested in doing something similar and needs any help or advice then get hold of me.

Im enjoying it whilst i can, no doubt some scroat will have a go break in and nick the lot or i`ll have an accident and write the lot off :) Oh im so optimistic arent I ?

As above, very impressive!

Roughly how much did the basic PC and screen cost you? (not including the extras)

Thanks

Hi Si, at the time i think the screen was about £250 but i believe these might be a bit cheaper now. The mini itx PC was probably about £300 all in, case processor motherboard memory hard drive. Powersupply i think was £40. Prices may have changed somewhat, i mean that was a year ago.

I would say that all together with all the extras + sub and stuff i probably did it in well under £1000. But i built on it slowly so it didnt feel like a huge shell out.

Thanks for the compliments, it is a nice system, was just a hobby for me though but i do use it daily.

the idea of auto connectin to yuour home network and downloads the mp3s auto off your PC sounds awesome! does look and seem very good. only prob is id be scared to park it anywhere with all the stuff in so dont go shouting it about to everyone : P ( some on ei knew in the pub was bragging how much his sub cost in his old corsa, left the corsa tehre that night cos he was too pissed to drive and someone stole it, remember people like taht are everywhere and always listenin ) love the idea of thewifi from car, proper awesome, however to save all the trouble couldnt you have just got a lap top ? i know it dont look as good but cheaper AND you can take it places. but if ya got money why not go for that :p

Does look the sex :D

When the screen isnt in use, it folds down and looks like a cheap (it does!) CD player!

reed: yeah youre absolutely right, i dont wanna go round showin it off everywhere. Nothin gis left on show though when im out of the car, the screen looks like a clock and factory fitted as it folds down and all the ice is hidden in the boot.
Ive got tinted windows too so actualyl peering in and smashing them are harder.

But yes no doubt some scroat will find the car and help himself to the ice one day :( Hope not of course! But it happened to ed :(

Is your PC in the boot then? I 'hacked' the back out of my glovebox and made a quick case for mine (still haven't taken it out to take a picture  ). Here's a pic of my screen. Setup is very similar to yours but I went for the non-motorised screen:

I've just read your post and checked out your Yahoo pics and the whole thing looks great. You mentioned not doing this all at once, what did you actually buy to get it started (playing mp3s, possibly video files) and how much did it cost you.

Cheers

skoov.
Looks nice very similar set up to mine, Are you using Car2PC adaptor to control your mp3s? Is it roadrunner front end you got on there with winamp? How is the Car2PC adaptor working on yours? As im having trouble getting it to work fully. The sound comes through great but i can only fast forward and rewind, cant actually skip tracks. Car2PC adaptor isnt recognising the button press. Im currently working on it with the manufactorer.

Great how you got the Car PC to fit in the glovebox, probably a lot neater than mine :)

Fordy FR:

To play MP3s you basicaly just need:
A mini ITX box or laptop (tho mini itx with automotive power supply is far better)
dock that in the boot or behind glove box or anywhere out of the way.
Touch screen, motorised one in my pics or the one in skoovs pic works well. As it fits spare DIN slot.
A method of getting sound to head unit. If you have 3rd party head unit it may have aux inputs. If using standard one use either FM Transmitter or Car2PC Adaptor.

Not sure on current prices. Screens probably gonna cost you about £200 and mini itx box about £300. Then you`l ljust need a bit of cabling, lots of patience and some software. Plenty of info on www.digital-car.co.uk and www.mp3car.com. The mini itx is basically a small form factor PC with tiny motherboard, uses low power. Theres some places offering full custom built solutions but i built mine myself. Bought a case, bought a motherboard, bought a processor etc. Was cheaper that way.
Hope this helps!

Nope I'm using an ICELink cable because I did have my ipod in there before I put the PC in. That imitates the cd changer in the same way, so I just tapped into the audio wires for that. I can't control my PC with the stereo buttons this way though :)

Maybe I'll get a car2pc adapter when you've fixed all the bugs ;)

Yep RR and winamp with mapmonkey :)

Cheers

I'm in awe! It's obviously a lot of time and effort has gone into this, and it sounds like you enjoyed every second as well. Top Marks!
