Can I Oil My Cam Belt - It's Developed a Squeak! 16V

Hey all, ive just replaced my Cam Belt - (approx 300 miles ago) and ive noticed my engine was starting to develop the usuall constant squeaking noise from under the hood when started up.

So, i wipped the bonnet up, WD40'd the usuall belts (if i replaced these averytime they squeaked i'd replace them every month ) and noticed that the noise was coming from inside the plastic covering of the dreaded Cam Belt!!

This has never happened before and i was wondering what i should do? I really don't fancy taking the belt off again as it took me ages to fit the bl@@dy thing . So is it as easy as taking the upper plastic cover off and WD40 away or is that going to cause me problems as if this slips - BANG goes the engine!

Try sticky honey - it's worked on ALL my cambelt changes unitl it beds in then its very quiet [assume you have changed the idlers etc.??. ..................

have you considered the possibility of tensioner bearings etc making the noise?
belt too tight , loose?

lubing up belts with WD will garentee they will slip and squeel

im not sure WD40 on the belts is helping.. you say you need to do it every month...? the noise is from slippage, so you actualyl need a dressing to stop slippage not encourage it.

NO, dont put wd40 on the belt. one thing is you dont want it to slip, and second im not sure how this would effect its strength!?

my first impression is it bedding in, how many miles have you done?
or if its more consistent it could be a bearing. - did you change the tensioner at the same time!?

Surely though the cam belt is toothed so can't slip anyway? I'd guess it's more likely a bearing gone somewhere.

YES I really do mean sticky honey!! - only a light smeer though and has been said in other comments wd40 IS NOT the thing to use unless you want it to slip?!??!

The only way to fix this, is take your car back to the dealer / last owner and leave it there, then buy a pushbike

you must have play in your cambelt tensioner.
the new belt which is firmer with no slack has revealed it.

if you put WD40 on it or honey please remember to
book me and all the SCN members front row seat ticket to see you mash up your timing or pop the engine.

was the tensioner replaced?

is your timing belt to tight? replace the timing belt tensioner.

If you want to try something as a cheap temp fix take the cover off and with the engine running lightly hold a stick of chalk on the belt so that you get a nice layer on the belt. Worked for me on my 206. Its not a permanant fix but should last a while in the dryer weather. But be very carful when doing this!

Baby powder works a treat with the likes of alternator belts etc

but with cambelts a squeak almost definately points towards a belt thats too tight or a dodgy tensioner bearing

I find CV grease on the alternator belt stopped it squeeling but its mangled anyway and about to snap most likely (its on the to do list)

definatly get the cover off and find what the problem is, like everyone says it sounds like a tensioner, think of it this way, if a alternator belt slips its a squeel and something to fix in 6 months, if a timing belt slips then bye bye engine lol
