back in the days in physiscs class we did something on cooling and solidification.
basically get a glass of freezzing cold water and add boiling hot water to it and the glass breaks/smashes in to bits.
on your car it must be a combination of cold weather and the sudden activation of the demister on your rear screen.

why doesn't this happen to the mirror glass or windscreen then? If this was the case they shouldn't deign them with so much sudden heat then really surprised they get away with it.

rear demisters heat up quickly with an element on the glass heating inside and outside where as warm air will take a while to warm a cold windscreen just on the inside also windscreens are thicker.
blowing warm air onto a cold screen will just make it steam from the outside if the outside air temprature is cool enough and you leave the heat on long enough.
they did do a thew cars back in the day with heated windsceens obviously theres a reason why they stopped doing them and id say they probally smashed on ocassions on a cold day but i dont know for sure.

Lots of golf have heated windscreens as people at work were saying why was I de-icing my screen they though ibiza had them too, as if! Alot of cars still ahve them so can't be that bad.
My windscreen was frozen on the inside this morning! What about the heated mirrors then never heard of them cracking like the rear screen?

i didnt know that i thought heated windscreens were a thing of the past, with the mirrors id say the reflective film has somthing to do with it as the reflective part is a conductor that is just a guess though lol.

Half the DABs have rear speakers, half dont :'(

Mine unfortunately doesn't have them. But then again i have a 3 door car, and i'll never sit in the back :)

I understand that.

What makes me wonder is that when I wash my pint glasses I use hot water from the kettle. So I go from a Boiling hot pint glass to a freezing cold glass by rinsing it under the cold tap and it never breaks?

I haven't really heard of a rear window breaking from the demister either?

the temprature difference isnt the same the cold water isnt really a big enough temprature drop from boiling the cold water would have to be just before freezing cold.

throw boiling hot water over your frozen window and it will more than likely break.
quick temprature change can smash glass just like it will warp metal if the temprature change is great enough.
so your hot pint glass would have to go from being boiling to nearly freezing cold quickly for it to break.
