Getting close to giving up

Seriously I've never known a car like it.

I bought my 03 Cupra at the start of November last year, not 3 months yet. The rac inspection showed brakes needed replacing and that was about it, structually sound and no other big issues. I knew the paint was naff but convinced myself I could live with it until funds would allow a remedy. It came with SEAT service history.

Three days later the indicators, wipers and lights stopped working. After a fruitless rac call out it was picked up by a friend we who has a garage. It needed a new ignition switch which fixed the issue. While it was there it had new Pagid discs and pads fitted both front and rear, a HID conversion that he had lying around and a Piper X filter fitted too along with some cheapo LEDs . It drove ok when picked up.

A couple of weeks later I booked it in to another friends garage and had a full service using only genuine parts and fluids and the cambelt was done then too. Car was on about 54.5k. It had diagnostics run on it and everything came back ok. About a week later it had a stage 1 map and again it drove ok.

A week later it started to hesitate and was taken back to the garage where a new N75 and MAF were fitted, from suggestions on the forum. It felt better but not right.

Scott (Mr OCD) on here very kindly offered to have a look at it with the right software and we found boost leak which resulted in a new Forge DV being fitted along with a new CTS bought from Seres in Ireland, very quick delivery. Again the car felt much better.

Two weeks ago I noticed the drivers and rear passenger footwells now had puddles in them which I'm currently soaking up with towels until I get around to fixing them, no doubt with help from Scott.

Then this morning I start the car and get the temp guage warning light and beep and the temp now fluctuates between 90 when slow moving or stationary and what looks like about 60-70 when driving at any speed over say 20mph.

It's driving me mad! I'm definately not mechanically minded, I can make them look good and drive pretty well but mechanical stuff I just leave to people who know better. All this has been utterly soul destroying and has cost a not so small fortune. Will it ever stop? Honestly I love the car when its briefly been running right but that just hasn't been enough compared to the time its felt right and not had issues. I'm terribly conscious of not knowing what I'm doing and having to rely on Scott who has been and continues to be a feckin star.

Sorry for the rant its just got me so down and I'm scared of driving the car how it should be driven for fear of what's going to go wrong next. I know I sound like a big girl but I've never known a car to have so much go wrong with it in such a short space of time. I just needed to let off steam ....and cry in a corner.

Thanks guys I know they're common faults its just they all seem to be stalking me. Fix one and another bugger jumps up and slaps me across the face lol I needed a rant and to know it wasn't just me, and coming from N/A Hondas I had very few problems with the Type Rs.

Thanks for digging out the links Lee. I still have a boost leak too and will assume its what you suggested a while ago, the hose thing under the mani. I think Scott has suggested we have a look under there at the weekend, not clued up enough to do on my own yet lol

Tis infuriating that there are loads of things that may cause the same issues though. I did strop massively on the way home tonight though, found myself wanting my Honda back for a while.

I've had pretty much all the above in the 9 months I've owned my car. Thankfully I'm slightly handy, have vagcom and have done most of the work myself keeping it cheap. One fault I had that you haven't had is a failed clutch/dmf out of the blue. Ouch is all I can say.

Then again my car is just about to tip 100k so not so unexpected.

These forums have saved me hundreds if not more in diagnosing problems.

I too have migrated from Honda's as i was a bit board with having nothing to repair but i think i might have bit off more than i was wanting, but the upside is the satisfaction when everything comes together and you get that boost rush.

Scott is a good lad he'll look after you.

Be fine once right, then enjoy :)

Yep he's been brilliant and spot on with everything too, good bloke.

Don't say that, my car might be listening, deciding on the next thing to throw at me

as stated these are common faults, they are cheap faults too, i mean the door seal is a simple fix , i have had similar problems on my cars, i have has 3 leon cupra r's in total and each has had the same problems, but as everyone states, once they are fixed and fixed properly , i believe you will love the car.

... found myself wanting my Honda back for a while.
Take your LCR onto the motorway, cruise at 85, and then turn on the stereo. Hear that noise?

Yep, it's music :D

Bet you couldn't even hear the stereo when cruising at 85 in a VTEC Honda pulling approx 4700rpm in 6th - tinnitus, anyone? :stars:

Hopefully, you've now sorted your LCR's wee niggles and can enjoy it for what it is: an excellent B-road blaster and a relaxing motorway cruiser :)

I think I prefer the Leon, I had a huge surprised grin when I test drove it, to me it felt as planted and as quick as my dc2 with some of the comfort the atr had too. That's why its upset me with these bloody niggles. You think "Ace car, really like it. Oh why has it started hesitating? Why is the eml on again?" It's just not a lot went wrong with my Type Rs and the probs I've had with the Leon have all come so close together.

Plus I'm an impatient bugger and want problems fixed soon as they arise and with pretty much no technical knowledge that can be hard, not just lack if knowledge but finding the time too. I still run MCR-VTEC.co.uk but most of the guys don't know much about anything except Honda. This place has been a godsend though with the likes of Scott, Lee and all the rest offering advice, even though I may not understand it all the time lol

don't give up mate. Ive recently spent close to £2000 on new engine mounts, brakes pads, brakes lines, master cylinder, clutch, flywheel, mot, service, handbrake cables, cam belt and water pump. my thinking is that i now know my car has had all the work done and if i brought another second hand car id potentially have to replace parts again.

Yeah, I know what you mean fella.

Just to be sure on the maf Scott unplugged it after some horrendous logging sessions and we did another run.

Huge difference, actually hit real boost. I've unplugged it before and hadn't noticed much difference but obviously hadn't pushed it enough. Now it looks like my new maf is faulty. Replacement on its way. Fingers crossed.

If it is a faulty new maf it goes to show check everything twice.

Huge thanks yet again to Mr OCD if it wasn't for him I'd either give up or slap the car in to Awesome for a costly diagnosis and fix. Thanks bro, I owe you.

Still need to get a new thermostat as my temp is still all over the place.
