300lb-ft on standard rods is the 'limit'? think again.

1.8T has a "Combi Valve" in place of the traditional EGR of the TDIs. "Combi" title comes from the fact at cold engine temps it also recirculates fresh air provided by the SAI pump to the exhaust to heat up the catalytic converter.

Cam chain tensioner provides the variable valve timing by changing phase between inlet and exhaust camshafts, so the valve opening overlaps and a bit of exhaust gas remains in the cylinder after the piston has raised, before the next intake. This does the same thing as a classic EGR.

The valvetrain is the most sensitive part to lack of oil or sludging.

interestingly (kind of) early cars has SAI, then the dropped it with vvt cars, then last 1.8t's got vvt + sai again... No doubt from ever decreasing emissions limits being applied..

Emissions systems may be unneeded and parasitic additions (reasons for which people drop them, or even choose directly non-VVT heads and simplified stand-alone ECUs for an engine built from scratch).

But uncontrolled burning is never ideal, and turns quickly into detonation. On a circuit, all weather conditions are predictable, fuel is always top-notch, overfueling is welcome, emissions systems are not needed at all, car runs at WOT for much of the time and barely needs even a MAF. On the street, people may choose to be a bit prudent (or face a holed piston, a blown rod, burnt exhaust valves, or, God forbid, all of them together).

I posted this in my RR but thought I'd copy and paste it here as well.

Every time I convince my self to stop being a girl and get my car mapped I find photos like this!

Apparently from a standard unmapped LCR. The owner took his car to a VAG sepcialist with a loud ticking from the car!
I know they're a lot of factors involved and most cars are fine but... Imagine if that had gone over taking a truck on the A15! Scary thought.

No he drove in like that!:scary:

I don't know why the link doesn't work it from the MKIV section of the Golf GTI forum if anyone's interested.

i'm told it isn't modified, i haven't tried reading the ecu to see if it's mapped and obviously can't put it on the dyno at the moment

there were no signs of detonation or debris on the piston crown, some bearing damage but the crank survived. the cylinder wall would go again since it knocked the oil spray jet clean off before it could interfere with the rings.. the problem with that is the thread didn't pull out of the spray jet, it pulled a big chunk of the inside of the block with it  the crank sensor pickup ring isn't looking too clever either thanks to the groove it shaved off the bottom of the piston skirt that you can see in the pictures
