interestingly (kind of) early cars has SAI, then the dropped it with vvt cars, then last 1.8t's got vvt + sai again... No doubt from ever decreasing emissions limits being applied..
Emissions systems may be unneeded and parasitic additions (reasons for which people drop them, or even choose directly non-VVT heads and simplified stand-alone ECUs for an engine built from scratch).
But uncontrolled burning is never ideal, and turns quickly into detonation. On a circuit, all weather conditions are predictable, fuel is always top-notch, overfueling is welcome, emissions systems are not needed at all, car runs at WOT for much of the time and barely needs even a MAF. On the street, people may choose to be a bit prudent (or face a holed piston, a blown rod, burnt exhaust valves, or, God forbid, all of them together).

Apparently from a standard unmapped LCR. The owner took his car to a VAG sepcialist with a loud ticking from the car!
I know they're a lot of factors involved and most cars are fine but... Imagine if that had gone over taking a truck on the A15! Scary thought.

Hmmm have to wonder if that car was remapped previously, ragged silly then put back to standard prior to selling....
