Hi you lucky lot. just a question !! the gear paddels. in sport i know it's higher revs, but is it faster useing this method , or is it just as quick in D SHIFT, Becase when you hit the throttle it changes down & you take off, is this just as quick, but with out the fun playing with the paddles. can somebody put me in the bigger picture of life.
cheers Nick..........:help:

This is how it works. D is auto, the gears will change up as soon as possible for economy on light acceleration. If you do floor it, the gearbox reacts and extends the rev range and it will drop down the cogs to find power it all depends on your throttle usage. Sport will try and KEEP the gear and revs at the optimal power output so you have the optimal ability to go at any time, it will also blip the throttle between gear changes on down shifts. Sports mode is all about optimal power as much of the time and is full auto mode. If in D you pull the gear selector towards you it will let you control changes with the paddles or alternaitvely you can just use a pddle to override and you will automatically be in control. The gearbox will prevent you from under and over revving still to preserve the engine.

The car is very clever and the DSG gearbox and engine work in tandem and respond to your driving style.

Bocawata has reminded me of something else. When you move the gear selector into +/- you can push it forwards to go up a gear or pull it back to go down a gear.

The blipping recreates the effect of heel and toe braking, whereby you blip the throttle momentarily during the gear change to raise the engine speed to match the gear/road speed of the new lower gear creating a smoother downshift which avoids unsettling the car under heavy braking & downchanging.
Most noticeable if you go from third to second, for example, and you let the clutch up too suddenly it car jumps on its nose under the engine braking.. by blipping the throttle you eliminate this nosedive effect

Bliping is matching the rev's for the lower gear so its smoother.

Got mine tonight and i've been playing with it all night. The DSG really is great. Its learning already!

This engine and gearbox combo is very clever, feels like big brother when it adapts to your driving. The automatic side to the driving is great cos it means you can concentrate on the hazards of the road and keep an eye out for the cops when your being a bit throttle happy. You can be very lazy with these cars and they cruise on the motorways effortlessly, but they do have a great fun side to them when you want it.

Speaking of cruising on motorways, what sort of mpg are you seeing doing a steady 70, is it anywhere near the official figure of 53

Nope, Best I have got on the MPG on a motorway is 48.7MPG at 84mph. £0 and 40 I think are good too. I am averaging 270 miles per tank, best I've managed is 310miles. That was on the second tank of fuela dn I haven't managed to match it again. The car is best and most economical in D mode and in cruise control, the car's calculations and monitoring are more accurate and precise than ur foot. I didn't buy this car for economy, power, looks and reliablity are what I wanted, yeah you expect a car to do some mileage, I'm happy with mine.

ED

Reply to ur question, I think 70 is 44 mpg in cruise control.

The one in Wolverhampton isn't very reliable for opening, but the one in Cannock is always open and it's easier to get to from my house. I used Esso Premium once and I could notice a dfference unless it was me expecting one. Nope Shell Optimax only 4 me. Nothing but the best for my TSI beast.

I do love cruise control though, makes this car a great cruiser and it has the go when you want it. Got to get me rear calipers painted next week. The car looks odd.

I must admit after a couple of tanks of v-power I noticed the difference.

Usually get Total Excellum, best of whats around these parts.
