Yep. Put a few coats of primer on and sand down with wet + dry to get it nice and smooth and remove any imperfections. Then paint as usual. You might want to put a few extra coats of lacker on though due to the high amount of use they will get.
Rub down the handles with 400 wet+dry to provide a key for the primer, after priming rub down with 600 wet+dry, prime again, then rub down with 600 wet+dry, then colour coat, then rub down with 1200 wet+dry, colour coat again, rub with 1200 (if necessary) then at least two clear coats(laquer). (two coats of everything).
You should always use wet+dry paper wet - soak it in water first, and rub gently after each coat, if you take too much paint off you can always do another coat.
Build up paint slowly (couple of sprays at a time), and leave each coat to dry till next day, if you don`t prepare each stage properly - because of the heavy use the handles get it will start coming off and look c**p!
