FR MK3 2.0 184 oil temperature

Hi all.

Apologies if this has already come up. I've seen a couple of similar posts but nothing quite the same.

My oil temperature when driving normal is between 90 and 100 celcius.

When driving it hard after 10-30 minutes it would run up to 115 ish but then come back down to earth at 95-100 again.

Is that normal? Will 115 damage the engine or am I being paranoid?

Thanks in advance.

Mines runs bang on 90 and will go up a few degrees if i push it. Never tried pushing it for 10-30 minutes though, but I wouldn't be surprised if went to near the 115 mark. Have you checked your oil level?

This is perfectly normal.

Extended time at 120-125+ is where the oil will start to suffer.

I don't believe I've seen a specific operating max published for the VW OE oil but it will be in that region.

Perfectly normal. If it's not getting over 100+ you're not driving it properly!

Mine likes a regular oil change around 5,000 miles with some VW 507.00. I do 20,000 miles a year, so effectively 3 mini-services (oil & filter by myself) and then a full service (@garage) every 12m. I do not subscribe to this long-life service rubbish.

Regular DPF regens, stop/start driving and not many motorway miles can degrade the oil over time. My oil always needs topping up between changes as well. Much more thirsty than my pre-DPF Mk1 Leon.

Sound advice thank you all. I also like to change oil&filter between 5-7k.

I am thinking of using Castrol Edge Titanium 5w30. Cheapest I have seen is the 4 litre can at Costco for £28 inc vat. Meaning I'll have to get 8 litre as they don't sell 1 litre. But hey suppose I will always use it in the future.

I've used Castrol before - can get 5L on eBay for £29.99 on a 48 hour delivery.

Also used Quantum and currently using Mannol oil bulk buy:

I think that if you change the oil every 5-7k then as long as it's 507.00 you'll be fine. I've noticed no difference using any of them.
