Hello,

My Leon Cupra was involved in an accident last week whereby a van dropped a great hunk of metal right infront of me and i drove over it, couldn't have avoided it. Anyway, i have just been informed that the gearbox/sump and part of engine and suspension have been damaged and will cost the insurance people £4000 to put right.

They have just rang me and said it will be written off :( !. I am really not happy with that as i love my LC. But with it being a 52 reg i can see why they came to that decision.

Question is, in the next few days they will ring me and let me know how much they are going to pay out. I'm hoping for a fair figure to be able to buy another one. So, i don't want to be ripped off by them, so how much should i be asking them to pay out for it bearing in mind it's nearly 7 years old / and more to the point how much do you think they'll try to tell me it's worth !! ?

It's a 52 (2002) plate, Leon Cupra 180VT, 83,000 miles, FSH.

Best Regards,
Andrew

You think esure would value it at that ?, i hope so because trading it in the local garage quoted me £2k trade in against new, so i hope they at least quote me £2500, i'm somehow pessimistic tho !

All the best !

If you feel the rate they're offering is too low, you can negotiate a better rate with a little proof (e.g. autotrader etc). Remember, the insurance company is obliged to put you in the same position you were before the crash.

cheers smokescreen ! - i did a little homework on the "whatcar" website and it looks as if i'd expect around £3000 trade in, so if esure work on the "trade in" value then thats what i hopefully should be looking at (fingers crossed !)

Best Regards,
Andy

General rule of thumb you should always turn down the first offer, get on auto trader and find some overpriced cars.

Might only get you afew £100's but money's money.

Cheers demons uk!, i think i'll do that, anyway got my eye on a 58 4000miles new ibiza 1.6 sport for £9999, 2 yr 10 mth warranty, 17" alloys, black magic, climate control. Seems a good price !

The Mk2 Octavia VRS 2.0T can be had for less than £9k now, for 2 yr old models. Might be worth a look, too.

Thats true, but i've finally succumbed to the fact i cannot afford anything too powerful these days. I do 50 miles a day to and from work and need something on the economical side. When i bought the cupra i worked local so the distance/fuel wasn't a problem. I got 29mpg in my Cupra and paid over £200 a month in petrol when i changed job, hopefully the 1.6 petrol will be around 43 mpg so i should save around £50 a month !

All the best,
Andy

Might be better off with a diesel with a remap in that case, ideal for long motorway cruises.

See the thing is it's not motorway driving, it's what i'd call extra urban, mainly B roads and 60mph limits, few stops and starts. I was looking at the 1.9TDi (not out yet), but it's £600 more than the 1.6 105PS and diesel seems to be around 11p a litre more and doing the maths (43mpg for the 1.6 petrol, 60mpg for the 1.9TDi) it looks like diesel wouldn't really pay for itself until around 2 and a half years time (at my mileage) !

Regards,
Andy

Handy advice that, wish I knew that many years ago when I last had an "incident". I just got fobbed off with a lower figure than my car was worth.
