Craig, the tornado red in my opinion matches great, I think that the alpine white would probably match better....

that gun is exactly the kind of thing I need, cheap and cheerful, is the spray pattern any different to the normal spray?

I dont know, Ive struggled to get a good match when I painted my spoiler.

I looked at the Alpine White in Halfords at the weekend but it looked darker. Going to get some paint matched up using my petrol cap.

Craig - dont judge it on the cap you know... or have you actually tried it? Tornado red cap colour looks ay off to the actual colour!... Cheers Arun :) yeah will practise! Wouldn't mind investing in a spray gun too!... :)

Update - *Need help*...

Riiight - tomorrow's gonna be nice too. Soo - I'll lacquer after practising a few times... :whistle:

Arun, or anyone else with tips, what do I do to the 3 - 4 coats I've applied? Sand it down to a matt finish with 1500 wet 'n' dry is it? Anything else? Got a little cocky on the last coat earlier - dripped a tiny bit on the line of the wheelarch - will have to sort that out 2morrow.

Any suggestions or help let me know asap :D

yeah use 1200-1500 wet and dry, but make sure its wet lol, don't worry about the drip it'll come out after gentle sanding and lacquer....

use plenty of water with the sandpaper and make sure the finish is matt, make sure you dont rub over it to much or the whole paint will come off lol,
wipe it down with a clean cloth, then lacquer, two coats of that.

Right - it's a lovely day as hoped, been watching a bit of Wimbledon and rubbed down my wing mirrors. I had painted these about a year ago - but hadn't got around to lacquering them... so 2 wing mirrors were ideal to practise on!... :p

This is them before I lacquered them (a year ago, by the way - car looks rather pinky when I use the Fuji, doesn't do it much justice);

I'm really pleased with the driver's side mirror, and I'm happy with the pass. side too. I will say this though - make sure that when you spray outside - that there isn't any breeze at all lol, a little draft came around the corner where I was spraying and a tiny black bit stuck to the mirror just before I took it in on the stool I was working on... aah well :p

Let you know how I get on with the rear panel later :)

haha :p it'll cost you dearly my friend! I hate it, hated every moment of it since that b*st*rd scratched my car! Never again I tell you... I enjoyed doing the mirrors, but repairing as it were, is a nightmare!

This is the other (pass. mirror cover);

Considering that I'm doing this with no more than a couple of Aerosols, I have to say - I'm pretty impressed. Although - I had a can of Red Primer hanging about in the shed - so I used that on the scratch to cover the filler and bare metal. After 3 - 4 coats of Tornado Red yesterday, I managed to sand it lightly with 1500 earlier, I'm pretty happy with the result, looks smooth and in a matt finish ready for painting!... BUUUT - where there's overspray of primer and Y3D - there's still speckles of red primer showing through where it's primed ontop of OK bodywork...

If I make sure that I don't lacquer it that much, is it possible, when all dry in about 2 weeks, to T-cut all that sh*t off? Just brings to whole restoration down a bit :shrug:

Help!

Some pics; (you have to look pretty closely)

(It looks dirt-like. It's the primer overspray on the Tornado).

just yank them off carefully. Fold them in - then they come off. 4 catches hold them against the metal diagphram. Yehaa I know :( what now? Rub it down? Lacquer again?

best thing to do would be 1200-1500 wet sand, then lacquer again,

i think it would be better to get it thicker than thinner, because when its thick it still shines although be careful of drips, when its to thin it looks rough, which is probably worse

definate! You know why it did drip though... cause there was a bit of a breeze! I shouldn't have done it, I knew even before I started! Need to do it in a garage, it was spraying unevenly over the bodywork. Sometimes too little, sometimes too much. All in all - there's 3 minor drips... It's not THAT bad though after all.

Riiight - been some time now. Thought I'd bump my thread up with pics of the finished repair. I managed to correct the lacquer - and it looks pretty good I must say :)

Need to T-Cut it in lightly into the rest of the bodywork in about 2 - 3 weeks time :) but nah - it looks acceptable until then imo...

That's all for now.

hey mate thanks!... erm - well you have to rub down the lacquer, to a matt finish. Try making as smaller rub down as possible around the damage - don't stretch out the job bigger than it really needs to be. Spray evenly around the damage - where there's no paint. Primer and colour. But spray lightly as you get to the edges before lacquer. Try not getting it on the lacquer ok. Rub down the paint to a matt finish - and lacquer over it carefully. Make sure it's completley windless.

Tip for you - if you're using an aerosol, look at the shine and the amount going onto the paintwork from the side - worked for me - didn't over do it that way... :)

Alright thanks for that mate. I will try my best to get it even with the rest of the paint on the car. I am going to use some filler first then paint it. Only thing Im worried about is that the areas Im going to repair aint exactly that big. :confused: :blink:
