Just got a set of 17" VRS alloys for £127. The tyres are 205/50/17's, one of which is knackered. The alloys are just about good enough to put straight on, but I might just do a home refurb on them, as there are a couple of bubbles coming up and one alloy has a mild scrape on it.

Should I keep them silver or try another colour. Anthracite or black possibly?

Any ideas on home refurb and colour? Any easy way to get the tyres off without going to a garage? Will I need 205/40/17's instead?

Ta,

Craig

how much! You jammy git lol. They look sweet'

Yeah, I was chuffed at the price, thought they'd go for a lot more. Had a ceiling of £150 cos the missus didn't know about it (she does now....) ;)

profile of the tyres might be a problem....correct me if im wrong?
Awesome looking wheels tho...steal at that price! :)

I fancy having a go at refurbing them, if it goes wrong, I'll just get it done professionally. I bought some alloy wheel repair stuff a while ago off ebay and am itching to use it. [B)]

I think the profile is too high but I thought I might be able to get away with it at the rear and buy 2 new tyres for the front. I might put them on to see what they look like.

Can anyone help with suggestions regarding the refurb? Shall I sand them down or what about paint remover/stripper as in the acid dips? Silver, anthracite or black?

You'll defo need lower profile tyres. The rears will fit on but would look silly if you had lower profile tyres on the front. As for refurbing I made a thread of how I did mine...They still look mint after nearly 2 years :)

Nice one Altech. I remember reading your thread a while back. I thought Nitromors would be used somewhere. How did you flatten the wheel nut holes? Did you use any particular paint or was it from motor factors/Halfords?

Cheers,

Craig

I used a small flap wheel attached to a drill to sand down the wheel nut holes. I then used some 120 grade wet n dry paper to smooth the surface.

I bought the primer and lacquer from a motor factors, but I bought the colour spray from Halfords as they had a better selection.

Altech,

You used 120 grit sandpaper for the wheels - isn't that quite coarse? Did you use a finer grade as well?

I used 120 before primer (high build primer) and then wet sanded with 300 between the primer and colour

Cheers, just buying some off ebay now.

When I start the refurb, I'll put some piccies up. Thinking of anthracite or silver for the colour, may suit the car better.

Also looking at getting 215/40/17's from Camskill. See how it goes....

Been to Helfrauds and bought the following; 1 can high build grey primer, various sandpapers/sponges ranging from 120 grit to 400 grit, 1 can of Volvo dark grey paint, 1 can of clear lacquer, 1 tub of Isopon metallic filler. 38 quid all in.

Hoping to start next week.

Haha, just a light dusting on each wheel!!

I'll do 1 at a time and see how it goes. I want to check the colour as well, cos I'm still thinking about spraying them silver. I'm not sure what the best colour for a silver car is...

A colour nice and dark always seems to work best with silver cars, the wheels then make more of an impresson, rather than simply blending in with the colour scheme...

sorry, don't know the term for the darker colour :cartman:

P.S Sweet car btw, i'd trade cheap insurance for epic power anyday!
