what do you study at coventry? my brothers there doing an automotive course...
id scan my haynes but its several pages.

in a nutshell
drain oil
drain coolant, by taking the top and bottom hoses off the radiator
take all electrical connections off the head, as well as removing the air box.
unbolt the water pipe at the front of the engine,
take water pipe off the side
take accelerator cable off
unbolt exhaust manifold at a point behind the engine... (right arse... will probably take you all day to do this bit... getting it back on is easy enough.)
unbolt rocker cover,
unbolt head in sequence something like

______________________________

[ ]
[ 4 6 10 8 2 ]
[_____________________________]

pull old head away
clean away old gasket and carbon off the head and block
new gasket on
(replace head bolts
tighten head on in opposite of undo sequence
ill get torque figures for tightening if you need them

new gasket and bolts will cost you 20 pounds from ECP

bit vague but general idea

Oh well guess my idea for a drawing didnt work then

OH man....engine code i have nooooo idea....
its a 1997 2.08v gti cupra sport.....
Early 2.0 8v's are 2E, late 2.0 8v's are AGG. Yours being a '97 it *should* be an AGG but anything's possible around that time. If you have the service booklet, there should be a build sticker on the inside cover - it'll tell you on there. Or failing that, dig out your vehicle registration document (V5), it should tell you the engine number (which includes the code) on there. So you don't even need to lift the bonnet... :)
