Cam chain, not belt ;)

You MIGHT not have to get a new chain as it's designed to last the life of the car, but as yours is before the revised chain, you may have to....They are £300+....

Bonus % released in 8 days :D :D :D

Is this the case of 'better safe than sorry'? Should I get the timing chain done & cam chain done? Also why are they chains and not belts??

And oh yes 8 days :)

Timing/cam chain is the same thing.

Unless you change the chain and tensioner for the revised one, it isn't worth doing. You need to know that whoever is fitting the new chain and tensioner is fitting the revised parts.

They are chains simply because they are chains, there are many other cars out there with chains, some with a chain and a belt (Audi A6 2.7 TDI V6 for example), it's just a design preference.

ok thanks, would you (and anyone else) recommend to get it changed?? Also if i was to get uprated brake pads (but standard discs) would the pads fit ok into the normal calipers?

Its your call on the timing chain, there's been a few 1.2s have the chain slip and cause damage, whereas there's a few that hasn't, like Stezo's, which has a fair few miles on it now.

Personally, I've already bought the timing chain bits consisting of a new chain, tensioner etc and will be fitting them in the summer.

Most uprated pads will just fit into the standard calipers; what are you thinking of fitting?

ok, might as well better safe than sorry, would rather get it changed than having major engine damage & not sure yet EBC GreenStuff or Brembo pads

just over 2 more daysss :p

What's the point in new brakes? There is next to no point :p Better spent on that's lovely front bumper and alloy wheels :p

You won't notice much of a difference, especially on a light weight 1.2 like yours.. (even more light weight with the bits you keep ripping off it)

ah spose your right & waiting for bonus time :)

also i've suddenly developed a squeek....everytime i go over a speed bump (no matter what the speed) the left front suspension squeeks - is this the bushes packing up or does something need tightening after my accident (ages ago...still need to take it back and get it tracked again)

Yeahh mine has started creeking as well, only when going over a speed bump. It sounds like the rear suspension.. Excuse for lowering springs? :p

Update - lower tracking arm suspension bush (aka suspension bush) is split :( would it be worth while getting sports bushes or not? Are they any good?

Also what do I need for a service? Fuel filter, oil (part or fully synthetic?), oil filter, air filter, spark plugs (maybe?) anything else??

Cheers

That sounds like a rather geeky, anal name for the lower arm rear wishbone bushes. To fix you fit standard Cupra bushes. They've been covered in chapter and verse on this forum mate, about £18 a pair to fit and £150ish for fitting if you send it to a garage.

Might be worth asking them to check if the collars on the ARB (anti-roll bar) are in good condition, if they've corroded off then the ARB needs changing too. Best changing the ARB and wishbone bushes together if possible, saves on labour costs.

Fuel filter isn't actually required, it's not on SEAT's service plan for 1.2 petrols, so it's up to you on that one. I changed mine though.

You'll need any oil that meets VW 504.00/507.00 approval (it says on the label on the back). My choice of oil is Quantum Longlife 3. The 1.2s only take about 3 litres of oil.

Then yes oil filter, air filter, spark plugs and also the pollen/cabin filter which is just above where your feet would be in the passenger footwell.

would it be worth while upgrading all the bushes to standard cupra ones or Powerflex ones? also might change it (depends on price etc). Local garage said about 50quid to fit em with standard 1.2 bushes (because i normally go there )

cheers though for the info :)

If you changed to Powerflex bushes you'd get a stiffer ride, though the steering should feel more direct.

To be honest, for the money involved and the gains you'd get, you'd be best pouring your money into coilovers or a springs and shock set up first.

Don't bother with standard 1.2 bushes, they'll only fall apart again within 10k miles.

ok, so just get some standard cupra bushes? (wheres the best place to find them?) Also when i get the new alloys and then really start changing the cars look & stance would it be better to just get lowering springs or coilovers? (lowering springs are cheaper however i think they would murder the shocks)

Yikes, if mine's creaking I might have a knackered bush too... Could that be an MOT failure? Mine is on the 21th..... Better not be expensive, or my whole bonus is going to go KAPOOF.

10 hours, 49 minutes till the news! :D

As that man ^ said! Or you can get them from the local dealer if you prefer not to wait.

If money is no object, then coilovers are better. Or maybe even just lowering springs and dampers (shock absorbers) that are designed to match. However, not everybody (myself included) can afford coilovers. Usually AP and Weitec are the preffered coilover manufacturer on here.
Yikes, if mine's creaking I might have a knackered bush too... Could that be an MOT failure?
Both of them were fooked on mine when it went in for the MOT (paid for by the garage I was buying the car from) yet it still passed. Although I went back to the MOT station and complained that it had passed, IMO it should have failed as there was play in the front wheels, they'd move back and forth in the arch!

So long story short, if you've got play in your front wheels Chris, it should fail. However if it hasn't, you should be okay. They won't actually fail it on a creak.
