Well, right or wrong, they're both coming out tomorrow. I have a feeling that the fibre one will do a better job of sealing the connection, and one of them is damaged anyway. I didn't think any damage on the outside edge would cause a
problem, but it looks like that might be the case.
I didn't clean the lower pipe when I cleaned my EGR, so I'll give it some Mr Muscle tomorrow when I take it out. If there are any cracks or leaks in that, it'll give me a good chance to see if there's anything going on there too.
It's given me a good chance to learn about EGRs though - when they're open, closed etc. They're open more when the car is idling, but also when you're holding it at lower revs, which is when my shudder happens, but also the hissing sound is when I'm accelerating in lower gears, which suggests the hiss could be from either the gasket or the lower pipe, as that's the only time really that exhaust gases would be going through those pipes.
You know how those pipes smell as well? That's how my engine bay smells when I open the bonnet after a drive. What, you're telling me you haven't smelled your engine? Weirdo.
