Is Does you EGR Valve Hum??

Hi guys...

Whilst under the bonnet today of my 2 LTR 140 TDI..(investigating poor MPG problem as per my Previous post) ... with the engine off but Ignition ON.. I noticed a distinctive and quite loud humming noise and Its coming from the EGR Valve.

The EGR Valve is only 3 weeks Old... but im not sure if they all sound like this when the engine isnt running. It sounds like a High pitched Hum or Buzz.

Can any of you check your motors to ease my mind.

Or if this humming is a jammed motor or solenoid (which ever they have) ... Then it might be the cause of my Poor MPG.

Where is this located? I have a similar intermittent loud humm/buzz that is concerning me. First thought it was around the wheel arch but opening the bonnet, it appears to be coming from the rear of the engine compartment.

Only started doing it this year on my 07 Altea XL.

The egr valve is vacuum operated, although there is an eletrical connection. I think this is the shut off valve, which would probably operate when engine not off (it helps turn engine off)

There are two different types on EGR valve. the original vacuum type has been replaced by a fully electronic type, it depends on engine code and year.

However both have an electric throttle body for want of a better word an its usually this you can hear hum and click. This is normal, the throttle body does shut off the engine when turned off but it is also used for EGR. As there is no manifold depression to draw the exhaust gas into the intake the flap closes partly which creates a depression behind it which draws the exhaust gas in for reburning.

My buzz/hum is only slightly audible once you pull up and turn the engine off however once you step out of the car it's far more audible. It must cease at some point but must be after a while. Happened again tonight and it appears to be coming from a black box mounted at the back of the engine bay? This sound like it could be the EGR Valve?

Like I say, it's very intermittent and not much of an issue. Can happily live with it if safe in the knowledgeit's not something expensive about to go bang.

the egr is at the very front of the engine....

Unless you have a 1.9 TDI in which case it's at the rear.

so just to be clear... the EGR valve will Hum when ignition is on but engine not running??

I have a 1.9 TDI so I assume the EGR is the culprit. So is the concensus that a noisy EGR is nothing to be concerned about?
