Just dropped my car off at the garage for a wheel bearing and (if they have time) an outer cv joint.
Its been squeezed in to an already busy diary so may not get anything done at all.
They maybe able to keep the car till tomorrow pm but that means my missus taking me to work at 5am. That'll please her!

Two little wins for me today. I put the star washers in my fuel tank scuttle so I can put that back in soon and get rid of the knocking sound that was coming from the rear end - that was driving me crazy both because of the noise and because I couldn't actually find where it was coming from.

Second win was when I went to get the nearside front fog lamp out to replace the bulb. Noticed that the spade connector in the wiring loom had come out. Plugged it back in as best as I could and the lamp worked again. Saved a trip to Halfords or a wait for a bulb from eBay, so I'm feeling good about that.

Believe it or not, one of the issues is the boost pipe popping off. It's the drivers side intercooler one, dunno why it's such a pain

Spoiler's pretty secure, got 14 bolts in it. Wouldn't stand on it or anything but I'm not worried about it falling off

Do you use Murray clamps on the pipe.
I has issues with intercooler hoses popping off and swapped to Murray clamps. Job done.

Only drove the car for about 2 miles in traffic. I didn't hear anything but the proof in the pudding will be at 5am tomorrow when i drive to work.

same side were mine went and them cv boot clips breaking for fun, the genuine ones did not last the after market cheap ones lasted more even the cv boot, at least that's regreased them cv joints are costly and mines a low mile car but better that than some cars as they have major faults

Ok, some good and bad news.
The noise has gone and the car drives great.

I didnt get to look at the car untill i finnished work today.
The wheel is covered in cv grease hand prints and theres a small chip in the paint on the face of the wheel. Obviously, whilst the wheel was layed on the floor, something has been dropped on it.
Turned the wheel on to full lock and theres cv grease everywhere. All on the inner edge of the wheel rim, big lumps of it all over the track rod end and up the side of the shock absorber.
The new gaiter looks secure but wonder if there is a hole in it on the side i couldn't see. Not happy!
Just spoken to the garage owner and im taking the car is Saturday.

I'm really sorry to hear that. Seems there are fewer and fewer good garages out there - that or the more you learn about your car, the more you notice something being wrong.

Hope you get it sorted - but good news about the noise itself if it's gone - that's been bothering you a while.

Replaced some vacuum lines on my car today.

No obvious perishing and definitely no holes, but the new ones are silicone hoses, so should be a bit more reliable than the old rubber ones.

One thing I noticed was that the butterfly valve hose slides on and off pretty easily now. I used 4mm hose and the I/D of that one is probably better suited to 3mm, but as it's under vacuum I'm guessing that should be OK?

Haven't tested the car yet. It's not often I get a space outside the house to do work, so I'll probably jack up the car and put the fuel tank scuttle on tomorrow before getting it on the road.

As ive sead before. Ive been a mechanic for 30 years and only left the trade just before last Christmas to become a lorry driver. So i know my way round a motor. To old to roll about on the floor with a trolley jack now.
The garage that have been fixing my car since, ive been dealing with for 20 plus years. And i couldn't fault them. BUT the fitter who used to work there for many years left to be a fork lift driver in a local warehouse as its better money (true story) a little while ago.
And this bloke who replaced him is ******* useless. Rule no1, dont leave dirty hand prints on a car. It doesnt show respect to the customer or pride in your work.
Ive spent 2k at this garage over 3 occasions and only the 1st job its had was drama free. The clutch that was done by the mechanic that left.
I bet theyre regretting letting him go!

I stopped using my old garage that I used for years due the the good mechanic left as he moved up north and he was the only one I trusted, not paying top money for ruff mechanics also the cam belt change charges jumped so took business elsewhere good lads as well , only had one issue I.e chipped paint on one wheel due to new lad , it’s not happened again and they only change what’s required not the full bloody thing

Borrowed a workmates VCDS and for the first time in a long time my dash didn't have more lights on it than a Christmas tree. All looking promising for the upcoming MoT

Tried to complete the bedding in of the new pads but the perfect road I was going to use had a minor problem... couldn't get enough traction. Just kept spinning up or engaging ABS ? bit cold for this stuff

Still, at least it's done now (found another road later in the day) and it's passed its MoT for another year

Every time a PD150 passes its MoT it gives me hope that it can happen to mine too.

We are like a cheering group for each other when it comes to mot time on these mk1s lol, well mines still in paint shop 4 months on going up next week to see what's going on, would av been done by now but his lad stop turning up to work due to gf break up ish, so lots of back log of jobs, miss it now grrr

Nearly got stuck in a car park when the battery seemed to die. Wouldn't turn over, twiddled the battery wires and managed to get it going. Hopefully just the nuts on the battery need tightening in the light tomorrow.

Good luck - I really hate conversations like that. Either they're going to be super straightforward about it, or they're going to be arseholes. There never seems to be any middle ground.

If the rain holds off tomorrow, I'm going to be under the car. First the back end putting the fuel tank scuttle on and checking the rear ARB is still there, before putting some lube on the turbo actuator at the front. When I got the intercooler boost pipe on there, when I'd lift off in second to change gear, I'd hear a squeak, almost like a dodgy solenoid. Thinking there's a chance the actuator might be seizing a little, hence the car surging below 2,500rpm. If it doesn't work, it doesn't do any harm and it might rule out a couple of things.

Them I'll be putting the 3mm vacuum line on the butterfly valve actuator as the 4mm one is definitely too insecure.

If I get the surge sorted in the next few weeks, I'm going to be absolutely thrilled, because that'll mean the engine is tip top again. I'm sure someone will remind me of something I've been meaning to do, but in the past year I've done all the bushes and ball joints, changed the shocks, installed a boost gauge, put in a rear ARB, cleaned the turbo, new fuel filter and probably something huge that I've totally forgotten about.

Makes a change from the guy whose idea of spanner work was lifting the bonnet to put more windscreen washer fluid in.

Pissed off when one of my 2 "new" handbrake cables arrived with the sheath chipped off showing a rusty cable underneath
