Background music and Google maps navigation

We can't seem to get this combination working without background music almost disappearing during any Google map navigation announcement. It is really annoying. If use built in navigation or even Waze via car play then music/radio stays on correctly but google maps via car play behave totally different. Is there a setting that we are missing?

Funny thing, I prefer the radio volume to reduce when.
nav announcements are made. Horses for courses I guess.

I guess its all about where you drive. On motorways if you only hear navigation every few minutes then its not an issue. If you drive where we are (suburban London) its 2-3 announcement per minute, so end up not hearing music at all. Also if it was reduction in volume that would be ok, but its actually full mute with 1-2 sec gap before and after the announcement.

From what I could search over the internet - Google maps have settings (Navigation -> Mute state and Guidance Volume) which I'm going to try.
