The cut outs are valve pockets, pretty sure it's to protect the pistons from contact. Compression ratio can be achieve by a shallower piston so if they're exactly the same pistons apart from the CR and the rods are the same length, then yeah the shallower one will have lower compression.

Also oversized does not create compression that's just the diameter of the piston i.e. OEM piston size is 81mm and oversized is anything more than that.

Yeah thats what I meant Joe.. what I was trying to say is a shallower piston wouldnt need the cut outs as it will be further away from the valves. Which makes me think they are lower CR

After closer inspection I realised it actually has an ADR largeport head rather than a ported smallport.
Does anyone know if there is a largeport inlet manifold avaliable? (cant afford a SEM right now) or shall I just gasket match my original manifold..

could you use a N/A inlet manifold as they are realy comon and im sure most are largeport arnt they?

car is looking good and that engine looks promising. ive had a million electrical problems and have goten sick of the car.! i acidently bought a r33 skyline gtst. ill run it till it runs out of mot in september then back to the cupra.

AGU/AEB is the only big port inlet manifold, i used the AGU to make a custom one.

I think im just going to gasket match mine for now sure it will be fine for the hybrid.
Ah nightmare! I am worried I am going to have loads as the car has been off the road for quite some time now.

Sod the cupra and just keep the skyline! What sort of powers it running? got any pics?

What are the inlet sizes on the head? All the info I have seems to point to the ADR being small port. Good cams in there tho.

Next too my smallport they are HUGE 54mm i think where as my smallport was 40something

Just googled "ADR largeport" and it confirms it is
