Maybe it'd be worth going round the edge of the face with a hairdryer or heat gun to harden the paint even more. If your nail can't make an imprint on the paint then you should be ok.
Oh and ask the tyre fitter to bring out the 'special' lube just to make sure

Yeah mate, you're not wrong. Thought it would just about fit, but it rubs on the inner nearside cover, and when the 20mm spacers are on it rubs the rear wheel arch.
Also had a problem with the ABS kicking in when driving?? Need to get the 40's on and see what it's like then.

Well I finally managed to get the b*stards on.
I ended up buying 2 215/40/17's for the rear. Took them to the local garage who hacked chunks out of my lovely virginal rims. Got fed up for a bit, then cracked on and repaired them.
My tips for anyone doing wanting to do their own;
1) Make sure you've got loads of time and are willing to put the effort in.
2) Don't use Halfords paint - it is gash.
3) Make sure you go to a decent tyre place you will treat your rims gently.
4) Take the fr*gging tyres off the rim before painting.
I didn't manage to take any of my own advice, apart from eventually getting enough U-Pol aerosols to open a hole in the ozone layer above Formby.

I am really happy with the finish - I wanted them shiny and smooth. Sheetloads of lacquer. I'm wondering how they'll survive out on the roads though. Probably flake of in a couple of months!!

I know a couple of people are running vRS wheels (205/40/17) with 20mm spacers without a problem. Not sure about a 215 profile..
I bought those centre caps off ebay and can probably get some stickers but I'm not too bothered at the mo. I might try and put the 20mm's back on when I can be arsed getting the bloody wheels off again.
Those 215's are much better than the 205's. They cover the rim very nicely and would protect it from mild kerbage. There's no chance of that with the 205's!
I'm surprised that the ride seems to be the same/slightly better. Thought it would crash over bumps, but it's ok.

They're certainly shinier than when they were down to the bare alloy!!
Your wheels look great and I wish mine looked as good as those, but you're never going to get as good a finish with an aerosol compared to a pro spay gun. The main thing is I'm happy with the results. I wish I'd have known your mate - I would have given him a few gallons of beer to make it easier!
I think I'll stick those 20mm spacers on soon.
