No-one with a multimeter friend/family? You need to see if power is actually getting to the gauge!
Check it at the end where you are stealing power from and make sure there is a supply, and then check it again at the gauge to make sure its receiving the same supply! If it is then you have a dodgy gauge, if its not then the wiring is at fault.
If you cant get hold of 1, they sell them for £20ish in argos. I know its more expense but they are useful now and again
