Yes, venting is not for me.
Under vacuum (cruising) the pcv valve recirculates the fumes and under boost the hockey puck pulls them through and back in to the tip whilst closing the pcv valve.

So all bases are covered as long as you have both valves in place and your catch can (if fitted) is not vented.

Are you going standard + catch tank or just totally standard?

I'm keeping the catch can, just replumbing it to use 2 valves as currently it only has the hockey puck.

Im assuming with the standard setup + catch tank, the catch tank will be there to just 'polish' the crank waste? Doing a valid job but not under such a load as when being used as a stand alone item?

I've binned all the standard setup. If I had kept it I would just renew it all every couple of years or so. Mine had visble leaks and was very brittle.

I probably wouldn't have run the can with the standard setup.

On the thread I linked earlier he mentions emptying a can on a car he sold 3 years previously for the owner and it was only a quarter full! That's the sort of setup I want.

Ive got differing trains of thought when running a catch tank.

Id have preferred a closed circuit to a v2a setup.

The closed circuit system is drawing the crank fumes out via the turbo causing a vacuum in the crank case. Drawing out everything it can. I did an oil change last week after 6 months at about 140 miles pw. 3500ish miles?
The oil that came out was very clean. So i believe the system works very well. No condensation residue on the filler cap, not a jot.
Its the constant draining that does my head in.
Im not a lazy person but its always on my mind about the water/funk level in the can and concerned about it being drawn through into the turbo.

Vent to atmosphere im not convinced with to be honest.
The fumes are having to make their way to the catch tank under its own pressure (not drawn up by the turbo) so moving at a lower speed. At best or worst IM GUESSING the moisture vapours moving at a lower speed through the pipes have more chance of making contact with the inside of the pipes (gravity) and turning back into water droplets and running back down into the crank case. Ala water in the oil = condensation.

The standard pcv set up imo is the way to go. Its black magic to me at the moment and want to have a read up on how it works and what it does with the moisture and funk.

My oil I changed a few weeks ago was as new after 200 miles with the catch can. I don’t use the car much so I have an advantage there. The crank expels positive pressure so it will always push all the fumes out, on the flip side if the turbo is causing a vacuum and you’re on a day where hot fumes will condensate easily then you’re pulling moisture back through the turbo.

I try not to let it bother me as it’s a road car that will never spit flames and I only use it occasionally. I do like the science and theory behind it all though.

I installed a recirculated catch can setup due to perished pipes etc and performance definitely improved for it.

I was recently looking into a vta setup as can emptying is quite regular and don't like the idea of it freezing in winter, then I read this old thread which explains several reasons why you need a pcv valve, hockey puck and a recirculated setup.
It seems to make sense to me.
So I'm going to re pipe my setup in the near future.
Have a read, see what you think.

Have been searching for a couple weeks but haven't really found anything this particular or even similar so I thought I'd throw it up here. I have a 1.8t and deleted the Pcv valve and installed a vented catch can. I'm not sure if it's the colder weather but it looks like there's liquid...

Interesting reading. You're best cleaning the gunk out the PCV hoses every 60,000 once you've changed them to silicone rather than faff with clearing out a catch can every month IMO.

It seems however you run the pcv, it needs replacing or cleaning out periodically.

Got my cookbots installed and started assembling my cast wishbones, hubs etc ready to swap out with my current.

Also trying to figure out what this intermittent loud kinda rotational scraping sound is when im in first gear, just comes and goes, brakes, clutch gears and steering dont seem to stop or affect it happening.

Check for any signs of marks on your tyres or inside your wheels incase its picked some thing up. Or some body work or arch liners could have moved and rubbing on the tyres so when you jack it up it all separates and you can't see it

So went back to trying to get front doors to open, both still locked shut and not opening with keyfob or buttons inside - had a “moment” and thumped the drivers door handle and guess what, drivers door now opens
Still can’t get passenger door to open tho

Ok, ive just sat n read this from end to end and it makes a lot of sense.

Then at some point refitting it back to the car.
Maybe with the catch tank in the mix, maybe not.

Brilliant read. Although that guy is a bit over the top . I’m still sure the Oe set up is better some how but it’s 6 of 1 half a dozen of another. I’ve never heard of anyone’s catch can set up causing problems significant enough to damage an engine. I did see you can get a replacement pcv system on eBay for about £30 complete. I’ll see how my oil fares over the summer then look at it again. If it goes bang I’ll write a decent report and we will finally have concrete evidence

I don't need the worry of oil degrading faster than it should and potential long term problems that can cause!

If it was that serious it would be well known within the 1.8t community. I’ve never heard of anyone having seriously bad issues at all. I’ll keep an eye out now though.
