17's don't catch depending on the width and how much you've lowered the suspension by. i've got 17's with a 7" width on mine and they didn't catch at all standard. i dropped the rear by 120 mil and the front by 70 mil but for both have had to take the arch liners out and with the rear i had to roll the inner lip back
They're 7.5 width, and i havent lowered my car... but it looks quite low...

i personally wouldn't touch any cracked, broken rims.you could probs repair them but there will always be a weakness there and i woulnd't trust my cars weakness to be on the one bit of the car that touches the ground and controls so much

15's are the way, plenty of old school stuff about that looks good on a mk2.......could even try some wide 14's
well another set of wheels i realy like are the 13" steel mk3 polo wheels but in white... and theyre easy to pick up

guess it all depends what you think looks best in the end. 17's ain't to everyones taste but at least you know they'll fit.
Surculation had 19's on his old orange beast, that had a bit of arch work though
18"s where on it, enough arch space for 19"s tho
