done the chain tensioner today, what a total ballache, got it all done and back together but car wouldnt start after a good 5 mins of cranking, so back apart to check the marks, all timed good, so back together and wouldnt start again, sooooo back apart, double and triple checked the 16 links and put back together, i ran my battery out and a booster pack trying to start it, eventually on the 2nd booster pack it started, ran like **** for 5 mins then sorted itself out, phewwww thank f*ckkkkk.

in my annoyance to get it done i forgot to put these black plastic covers back (circled in the pics) do they make much difference, can i just leave them out or do they need to go back.

and before anyone says thats loads of red paint, thats not paint, thats my blood sweat and tears

it is paint lol

i think it took so long to crank over and start because it couldnt build oil pressure quick enough, most likely a partially blocked oil pickup? so guess what job im going to be doing over the next few days

I think I’ve busted my boot lock module. I can’t open the boot. Do I have to destroy trim to get to the module to open the boot? Or is there any easier way to do it??

If I remember correctly, there are screws in the hand holds on either side that you need to take out, but once you've done that, you can pull the trim out. There are metal trim clips that will probably all fall out, but if they're not broken, you just slot them back in. There's a rod or cable you can pull on then which will open the boot.

My issue with the lock not working was because I managed to pressure wash the grease out of the lock, and it wasn't moving freely. If the handle doesn't open the boot, if you pull it up, you'll see a little hole on the right hand side that if you use a nozzle, will get grease back into the assembly.

Bear in mind that if you buy a new lock, your key won't work in it, and when I stripped my mechanism down, I didn't see any way to transfer the lock from one to another.

The modules are pretty resilient, so I don't imagine you've done anything to break it - you might just need some lube.

THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID!

I manage to get the boot lock working again and opened the boot. I have removed the rear trim (what a 🤬!!). Everything looks fairly pristine In there. I’m inclined just to leave it as is. The original issue was caused by me using the key to unlock the boot while the battery was on charge in the garage so the car had no power at the time. Anyhow your thread and photos is massively useful.

Glad you found it useful! A lot of it was just me thinking out loud and trying to work out why something that looked simple was so complicated, and why it worked sometimes but not once I got it on the car again.

Just to make the trim more annoying, there are different clips. I think some are 14mm and some are 10mm, but they look really similar. I think two also have a notch cut in them so they slide in the other way. Can you get hold of these? Can you f...

dropped the sump today to change the oil pickup, been getting a slight rattle on cold startups even after changing the chain tensioner to a new gates part, this is the crap that came out of the old pickup, there was still small bits and some red silicone that i couldnt get out. this might be the reason for the oil not getting to the tensioner quick enough in the mornings? will find out tomorrow when i fill her with oil once the sealant sets on the sump

Yeah looks like old dipstick pieces to me as well. You only have to remove the dipstick when it's old and the plastic rings crumble and fall down the tube.

I'd replace the stick and the orange holder

The red might from the Dirko rocker cover sealant if you've had it redone.

yeah the old dipstick was breaking up when i got the car so i bought a new one, looks like theres bits of the old one, some black silicone sealant, bits of the old pcv elbow too, the red i think is the paint i used to mark the cams the more i think about it. hopefully this stops the tensioner rattle now.

Possibly a stupid question, but can you do that with oil in the car, or is this something I'm going to have to do when I change the oil?

Sorry to jump on the conversation, but my dipstick is getting old and brittle (I hear it happens to us all as we get older - the car, I mean, not me...) and a bit broke off not long ago. Can you get new ones?

Looking at that pickup, I know that's another job I'm probably going to have to do. That's going to be fun.

if you mean just the dipstick and tube then yeah you can do it anytime you want without draining, if you want to clean or replace the oil pickup then you need to drain the oil to drop the sump off the car, then remove the pickup, clean all the sump joining surfaces and on the block and reseal it with rtv, most people do it on these cars a preventative measure because of the dipstick, pcv and sludge blocking the pickup, i did it because of the tensioner rattle and thinking it wasnt building oil pressure quick enough , time will tell on that, takes 24hrs for sealant to dry before i can put oil in and start it up.

Yep, any old aftermarket one off ebay will do. I think mine's a Topran.
You just pull the holder off and slot in a new one after removing the metal bracket next to it.
