Thanks for those links Oliver, they're really interesting, it just confirms what i already believed: (quote from site)

I’m looking for a cheap tyre ?

"If you’re looking for a cheap tyre this doesn’t mean you’re buying a budget brand tyre or a tyre that isn’t going to grip or give long life. A cheap tyre can be a well know brand name tyre cheaper becuase bulk buying on tyres enables us to get brand name tyres at cheap prices. A less know name which is cheaper because off it’s lesser name i.e. Falken, Kumho, Nexen are all good brand tyres however they are cheaper because of many factors including less cost of brand name advertising etc. Our advise is don’t be put off by a cheaper tyres weigh up the advantages and cost savings click on the ‘cheap tyres test’ tab on left to find a cheaper alternative brand tyres"

So.......might be either the FATE (by Continental), or Falken ZE912

Best Regards,
Andy

Let me know what you go for Andy, after reading through some of the reviews I wonder if I am a fool for paying £170 a corner for the PS2s, might be worth giving the Eagles a try...

Nah, i'm sure it's sensible what you've done Oliver, by going for a good brand. I'm on a bit of a budget so needed a budget (but decent) tyre. Thinking i might go for the FATE ones made by Continental.

Anyway, i'll let you know what i plump for and what they're like !

Best Regards,
Andy

Hi Andy,

They will spin fairly easily in the wet. This is in fairly normal driving conditions, giving it a few beans from junctions or lights but not "chasing my own smoke" :)

Keep in mind I have the 1.9 tdi S (i.e 90 bhp) I would say the LCR will spin them to hell and back.

Hi Finn, are these the FATE we're talking about ? (if so, do you think the Falken ZE912 might be the better one to go for ?). The Falken are only £13 more per tyre.

Andy

Hi Paul, you had FATE tyres on (or Falken ZE912?), yep i might do that actually, just don't want to be stuck with a tyre i don't like for 25,000 miles !!

Andy

Ah right, thought you meant you'd had FATE on and found them to be pretty naff in the wet. Might still go for the FATE then. The ones i have on at the moment are Federal, the ones before that were Nexxen. Both seemed pretty good. I don't honestly think that the FATE will be too bad, being made by Continental.

Andy

Hi there, looks like the only FATE ones available in my size (225/45/17) are the Eximia AR-620, so these might not slip as much as the ones you have perhaps ?

Andy

I suspose it is luck of the draw, if you are saving enough over a big brand tyre and are happy to accept the potential drawbacks go for it. At the end of the day you have the knowledge that FATE make tyres for a big brand so will have gained knowledge etc.

l've got Goodyear F1's on mine and yeah, their not the cheapest of tyres but oh my god do they hold the road well.......and in my opinion, thats whats important. l'd rather spend extra and know that when l drive it through a corner like l stole it, l'm going to make it out the other side :p

Lol!, yep, set off to work at 6:00am, hence the posting at 5:36am !

Well i've just had a pair of FATE fitted, £130 for the both. Seem quite nice on handling although won't know till they've bedded in a bit !

Best Regards,
Andy

I have to say i went to Falkens all round after having Nangkang NS2 on rear and Hankook K104 on front. Nangkangs were originally on the front with Continentals on the rear (when i bought the wheels) and i have to say the Nangkangs were at best average. Upgraded to the Hankooks on the front and the Nangkangs were put to the rear. The Hankooks were an improvement in the dry, but they gave no warning of the limit in the wet, and could not handle any level of turbo boost in the wet if the wheels were even a little bit off straight. Even in third when the boost came in the bloody things would just spin up in the wet.:help:

Nangkangs on the rear were shocking. Although i let them get a bit low (2mm), in the wet, the back would just step out just showing it a bend.
Got the Falkens for £64 each and i have to say they are a world apart from the other two. I can't believe people are seriously suggesting using them.

I just checked Camskill http://www.camskill.co.uk/products.php?plid=m4b0s15p0
and the Falkens are £61 each!!!!

Generally really cheap tyres are so for a reason!

Hi all, well had a good run out on the new FATE tyres and all seems fine with them !. Had 4 seasons in a day today, rain, sun and wind (altho the wind was more to do with the fast food !). Anyway, they seem to cope fine on the front of a Leon Cupra 180 !.

Andy

I agree, there is a comfort in knowing that you'll give up before the tyres do!!!!

I'd go for the Eagles (as they get excellent reviews consistently) but they have a soft wall and the Michelins work equally as well on road and the track... :D

Next step is a ste of R888s for the track so I can preserve my PS2s.

lol!, yeah best part of the ps2 is that you can burn the rubber without burning the rubber !- so to speak ! (or without burning a hole in your wallet too !). Sick of pulling out money on the car. Having said that, the car is nearly 6 years old and has had nothing done to it (apart from brakes, tyres etc) until recently, even still the original exhaust on it !, so cannot grumble !

My neighbour was blown away with how little wear they showed after a full day at Donny. His were trashed!!!

I agree with you - our cars are expesive hobbies!! It is worth doing the research as you can save a small fortune!

Sounds like you got a good one and you've looked after her! Mine is three years old on Sunday and I have no plans to get rid for a few years to come!!!!

Are you still happy with the FATEs?

Hi there, yep had the FATE's nearly a week now and used them in the dry and in the wet. Yesterday i hit puddle after puddle on our local A road and was quite impressed at the fact there was very little pull to the left when going through a puddle on the left hand side of the car. My last tyres pulled like hell if i did that !. Maybe it's just the fact that the tread is new, not sure ?

But i cannot grumble with the tyres, they seem fine. I suppose they will get better after i've done 500 miles on them and bedded them in !

Yep, i'm gonna stick with her until at least next January (when the new Ibiza FR/Cupra comes out !). Love the shape of the new Ibiza, but wanted a more powerful one. Quite fancying the Ibiza Cupra TDi, which still does 0-60 in 7.4 seconds, which is even faster than my Leon Cupra (which does 0-60 in 7.7s !). Failing that i might stick with the Ibiza FR, which does it in a little under 9s i think.

I really need something a bit more economical on the fuel as i do best part of 45 miles a day to and from work and only get 31mpg out of her. The TDI Ibiza are supposedly able of twice that mpg, so theoretically saving me about £80 a month !!!! - but i still am loving my Leon Cupra. Never kept a car more than 2 years, but have had this one 4 and a half years !

Best Regards,
Andy
