Cupra Bumper & R32 Style Exhaust!!

I’ve been quite busy messing about with the car over the past few weeks.

I bought this Cupra rear bumper off ebay and set about smoothing it and playing with a few ideas for a one off custom exhaust.

After a load of smoothing I had the bumper re-sprayed. I then fitted it and then came up with some ideas for the exhaust. I like the twin FR style exhaust but I wanted something different. After working out that my idea would be possible I took my car to Styledynamix in Hayes. They were really helpful and agreed that my idea would work. I got my car booked in and went to collect it a few days ago.

Here are a few pics of the old system

I needed to do a lot of work to get the rear valance to fit around the new pipes. I also had to re-align the new system as it was sitting too low.

It came out really well, although it is a bit shiny!

I then plastic welded it in place and fitted the bumper to the car.

Cheers lads :)

When I start up the car the exhaust makes this funny grumble/howl noise which sounds quite cool. The turbo sounds louder too. I still have the standard centre silencer atm so it's not loud at all. Over 3000rpm it sounds more like a petrol now. I'll get rid of the annoying middle silencer soon as it's not as loud as I want it. I'll try n get a vid up aswell

Is your a TDI? 90 quid isn't bad but I was thinking of doing it myself. I can get a bit of stainless pipe for about 15 quid n just clamp it in place. I'll see what they say at Styledynamix as they want me to take my car back there for them to take some pics and a vid

Its very different :)

How did you go about smoothing the original cutout? Abit of plasitc welding and fibreglass?

Yup I plastic welded a patch in, fibre glassed it from behind for some strength and then used fibre glass filler to even up the outside

Sound! Need to do mine at some point, im after a traditional tdi look with hidden pipes.....hoping it will be less messy too.

Any progress pics? Take you long to shape it?

It took quite a while to get it right. Completely forgot about progress pics! But here's what I did,

I firstly cut out the exhaust tunnel part and tried to weld in a piece the same size as the cut out. This didn't work so I ended up welding some overlapping plastic strips on the inside, kinda like a skeleton. I then welded the patch to the skeleton and melted all the sides into each other. To make it more rigid and less prone to cracking I fibre glassed the area behind and then evened up the front with fibreglass filler. To finish it off I used a skim of normal body filler.

Painting it was the hard part as you can't buy the colour anywhere. I used the same paint that I used to paint my wheels (hurricane grey) as a base coat. I then lightly dusted metallic silver over the whole piece. The colour match is spot on but it is a bit shiny
